Guest guest
From what I’ve heard, lots of doctors recommend weaning b/c they’re ignorant of how the body works.. they worry that the contractions that nursing causes will cause problems. However, I can tell you from my own experience, if you aren’t high risk and d/n have a history of easy miscarriage, you should be fine. The ctx it causes are not a big deal and in fact, you don’t even notice them. I have nursed through several pregnancies all the way through to tandem nursing on the other end and then nursed for most of the pregnancy and gotten the kid weaned (). He last nursed at thanksgiving, while on vacation but has not asked since we got home. I do LLL’s recommended “don’t ask, don’t refuse” way of weaning. Your milk might turn back to colostrums and the baby might wean herself. didn’t LOVE the colostrums but she didn’t hate it either so I would say “ok, you can nurse for 1 minute” and she’d happily get off at the 1 or 2 minute.. however long I could stand it. It can be very handy to be nursing a toddler at the same as a baby, no engorgement. However, I did start to get touched out and dh tells me I was a cranky momma so he hasn’t supported tandem nursing again but peter and Christian ended up tandem night for a bit.. peter finally weaned completely when Christian was 4 months old but just b/c he’d fall asleep before Christian did. So, in short, yes it’s safe and you’ll be fine and lots of moms do it.. I would wean more based on how YOU feel rather than some OB telling me to. My OB never has cared if I was or wasn’t and in fact, hasn’t asked either. Guest guest
HI Kim, Congratulations on your pregnancy. I hope it is happy, healthy and enjoyable for you. The reason that some doctors tell nursing mums to wean is because they fear that the higher levels of oxytocin (the hormone that is secreted in order to let the milk down and get it flowing) will trigger a miscarriage, as oxytocin is the hormone responsible for uterine contractions. This is also the reason why some doctors advise against sex during pregnancy, because oxytocin is also secreted in large quantities during sexual arousal and orgasm.. It's a question that has been debated for many years, but man6y women do continue to nurse while pregnant and don't have problems at all. If the pregnancy is sound, nothing will harm it. HTH. Sue -- breastfeeding during pregnancy I just found out I am preg. With my third and I am still breastfeeding My second. I was talking to my obgyn's nurse and mentioned I was still Nursing. She asked if I was going to start weaning because the doctor Will recommend that I wean. I was planning to start weaning in May when My dd turns 2. Now I am kind of wondering why the doctor would Recommend weaning. Has anyone else been told to wean during preg.? Has anyone continued to nurse during preg.? Thank you, Kim
Guest guest
I got preggers with #2 when DS was about 15 months old. He was already down to nursing 2-3x's per day and 2-4x's per night. Most of it was comfort nursing anyway. I am 31 weeks now and DS nurses before nap - if he takes one and before bed. Sometimes he will nurse as he wakes in the morning and that occasionally puts him back to sleep. My doctor hesitated when I told her was still nursing, but he isn't doing it for sole nutritional value- mostly comfort. I am gaining good weight, and taking prenantals as well as making sure I eat well. So far, his occasional comfort nursing hasn't bothered my uterus - Doctors are affraid of it causing pre-term pressure waves and potentially (too) early birthing. As long as you don't have a history of pre-term, you are eating well and keeping an eye on pressure waves then I don't see the problem. will be 2 shortly before I deliver and I want to be able to use him for oversupply relief if he is still interested. If he decides to go back to 50% breastfed or more, then I'm ok with that. He has always been quite the breast bogart and he will stop when he is ready. -Kristi > > I just found out I am preg. with my third and I am still breastfeeding > my second. Guest guest
I nursed my third child through my entire 4th pregnancy (and still am now with no problems. I was concerned that it may bring her early and did have contractions a few nights around 36 weeks (not that nursing had anything to do with that) but she was born a few days before my 40 week mark. I did lose my milk early on but dd1 didn't give up and kept nursing! It wasn't the most comfortable thing in the world but I managed to get through it fine. I enjoyed the closeness it gave us as the baby drew near to coming earthside. I encourage you to do what you feel is right for you and your daughter. ~Lanie > > > > > > > I just found out I am preg. with my third and I am still > breastfeeding > > my second. Guest guest
Thank you very much for your reply. I admit, I was shocked when the nurse metioned weaning. But I guess, what does an ob know about breastfeeding? I will continue to do what feels right. Thank you, Kim
Guest guest
Thank you for your reply. My dd also only nurses a few times a day- morning, night, before nap and anytime she wants comfort. I don't have a history of preterm labor, so I am going to continue to nurse. Thank you again, Kim

Guest guest
Thank you so much for your reply, it helped to set my mind at ease. I am going to continue to nurse and see how it goes. I don't think I could do tandem nursing, so I am hoping I can make it to May and start weaning. Thank you, Kim
Guest guest
I tandem fed. My son was 14 months when my daughter was born. It didn't though last long, cause he didn't like the milk that came in from baby being born. I did breastfeed while pregnant. Guest guest
Hi Kim, I nursed through 2 whole pregnancies ! Guest guest
It used to be the practice that you had to wean, it is no longer the across the board reccomendation. There can be problems if you had preterm labor before (or even if you didn't), but I have had friends who nursed through their whole pregnancy and tandem nursed after. My son choose to wean himself when he was about 19 months old and I was about 5 months along. My family doc told me I absolutely HAD to wean or I would kill my unborn child. My midwife said it was fine as long as I took double my prenatals (which I was actually still taking the regular dose while nursing) and I didn't start having any contraction like feelings. It is a very personal decision and if your doctor does suggest it ask them why. If you have no history of problems you should be fine with nursing until LO decides to wean (often happens during the pregnancy). Good luck and congrats on the pregnancy! wife to SAHD 8-21-04 mom to Zac 5-11-05, Neva 6-2-07 > > I just found out I am preg. with my third and I am still breastfeeding > my second. Guest guest
Why double the prenatal? I’ve never been told that either. I usually forget to take my pills, of any kind. Taking a pill on a daily basis.. it d/n happen for me. Nita, Mom to: 14, Jon 13, 10, 8, 6, Christian (7/16/03 to 8/22/04), 2 and Isaac due Feb. 08 Learn from the mistakes of others. Guest guest
Congrats! I nursed throughout my entire pregnancy. My supply really dropped after the 6 month, but my toddler still enjoyed dry nursing. However, at times, I had to supplement with some type of milk. My toddler was 19 months when the baby was born. He came to the hospital and nursed. (The nurses were apalled!) It was suggested I wean, but my OB said the body naturally provides for the baby inside first. I didn't take double prenatals. I just drank as much water as I could and tried to eat well. My milk came in quickly and it's been wonderful tandem nursing ever since June. Best of luck. Guest guest
Well my doc is of the mind set that while nursing the nursling is taking nutrients from mom and then you add the pregnancy and it is more of a just to make sure there is enough there. She wasn't too worried with me sincee she knows I pretty well, but a lot of her patients don't and that is why she recommends it across the board. I often forgot to take mine too so I probably got about 1.5 the normal dose throughout the whole pregnancy. > > Why double the prenatal? I've never been told that either.
