Gail: I had heard a rumor about the RSV vaccine on a

preemie list a subscribe to. However, what is

happening, is that people are confusing the RSV

vaccine with the Rotavirus vaccine. They are 2

completely different things! Rotavirus is an

intestinal virus that usually starts off w/fever,

vomiting then it can turn to really debilitating

diarrhea (and it is the most gawd-awfullest smelling

stuff you have ever experienced, and my boys had it

twice!!!).

I did some research on the net and found that the CDC

did recommend that the RotaSheild vaccine be pulled

because it was found to cause an intestinal blockage.

I have never come across anything regarding bad side

effects from Synagis.

Gail: A lot of people have been confusing RSV with

Rotavirus. I check out a couple of preemie bb's and

this has been a hot topic there lately.

Fortunately, S & P never got RSV. Probably because we

kept them sequestered at home for the first 15mos of

their lives (but that's another story ...). However,

I do hold the title as Rotavirus Queen, since they

have managed to have that, twice!. The first time was

when they were 3 1/2 mos old (and still in NICU, I

might add). We got a 4am phone call from the

Neonatologist telling us was very ill and

being moved back over to Special Care nursery (btw, I

still cringe when the phone rings after 10pm at my

house). Sam came down w/it a couple days later. They

got it again last winter, just after the first of the

year. That's when I heard about the vaccine,

RotaShield. Apparently, it was given as a series of 2

or 3 injections all before 9 mos. At the time, I was

bummed that they couldn't get it, but after reading

about why the took it off the market, I'm glad.

Rotavirus causes a really nasty, foul diarrhea that

can quickly dehydrate a baby or small child. A friend

of mine almost lost her little boy because of it. He

was severely dehydrated and in the hospital almost a

week, so it can have severe consequences, just like

RSV.

Well, that's probably more info that you all wanted to

hear about. I'll quit rambling now.

It's been along time since dakota has had the RSV virus. If I remember right he was only 6 months when he got it. And he was so very congested and had trouble breathing. We actually had to use the nebulizer a lot to keep his airways open. But that's really all I remember about RSV. Wish I had more answers for you. How scary about the little girl. I am glad the pastor got her breathing again before the ambulance came. Those kiddos will be in my thoughts and prayers that they get better soon. How is the little girl doing now? Is she in the hospital?

From what I know about RSV the major difference is really the age of the child. What appears to be a cold for an older child or adult could really be RSV and the person sails through fairly easily. For babies and toddlers it can be disastrous. My son had it at 10 weeks old, eleven years ago and we're still sometimes dealing with the effects -- asthma flairs when he has a viral infection! It made for a long first year of life....Gretchen

A bunch of our friends kids have all come down with rsv and broncitis and double ear infections, there are at least 5 of them. and our kids spend alot of time with these kids. just yesterday the one little girl gracie stoped breathing and was having convultions at teh pastors house, thank goodness he got her breathing again before the ambulance came. my question is how do you know when it goes from being just a cold to rsv? Silas has a nonstop runny nose, and eden has a horrible cough, none of my kids have had it snd now i am a little worried.

You can't tell unless you get them tested. It is a simple blood test. My SPD/Autistic son had it and ended up in the hospital for a week. It can be life threatening. I would get them checked, especially the one with the cough. The runny nose can be the first symptom.

Best of luck,

Jenna

Foods that make mucus are dairy products, proteins, starches. Foods that don't are fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh juices.

My kids never ever caught anything from sick kids, although they were around them frequently. Their diet was almost all fresh stuff and they also took vitamin C. Having sick children is really scary, so I appreciate your fears. These are my best suggestions, except for reading them some Bible healings, and maybe talking about them: how Elijah and Elisha healed, and how Jesus healed -- to make sudden healing come alive for them.

They might like to think about how God is making them perfect right now, even though it may not seem like it. I have seen so many kids -- not just mine -- have wonderful, immediate healings when they've turned to God and asked for help, and felt that Love.

Even singing Christmas Carols might be very helpful (not Frosty the Snowman! maybe); like Silent Night, and the Cherry Tree Carol, ones that they can picture in their minds: the Peace and the Love.

Love,

Francine

In other words, the child will be noticeably very ill, much sicker

than if with a cold. You don't get a fever or generally wheezing with

a cold (unless your child is asthmatic). My daughter had RSV 23 years

ago, and she was a very, very sick little baby. My mom, an RN and

mother of 5 children, had come over to the house, and she said, " I

don't like how she looks. You should go to urgent care right now. " I

did, and I was glad I did.

When in doubt, bring the child to the doctor immediately.

Also, If your child has not been immunized against whooping cough (it

*can* be hard to tell the difference between RSV and pertussis and

any other illness with a lot of coughing), you'll need to make sure

everyone around your child practices the highest level of hygiene,

and keep the child away from other people, understanding that even if

you lock the child in the house, family members who come and go can

bring the illness into the home. I've had parapertussis, an illness

similar to pertussis (whooping cough), and words can't express how

ill I was, and how I would turn blue from not being able to breathe,

and how frightening it was to be coughing so hard and continuously

that I didn't have time to take a breath! Oh, and how long I was sick

(3 months). And I'm an army brat who lived overseas for a time, so

I've received ALL of the immunizations, including for pertussis. Now,

I'm extremely prone to bronchitis.

Continue to keep a close eye on them. It can move quickly to RSV in the little ones. Praying all is well for all of them and they soon recover! Have a blessed Christmas.

My son had RSV at 5 months old and was hospitalized. He was noticably

having a difficult time breathing. He was taking rapid and shallow

breaths. He was hospitalized for 6 weeks on and off. He kept being sent

home from the hospital because he " looked " healthy. They called him the

happy weezer ! They tell whether or not it is bronchitis by doing a

swab in the nose and it takes a short time to check it. By just looking

at a child you will not be able to see if they are sick.

It is serious ... but treatable. However, it took almost a full year to

get him off the nebulizer and tons of visits for pulse-ox testing for

months.

Good Luck,

mom to AS age 8

They called my little boy "The Happy Wheezer" when he was in/out of hospital as well. How cute!

What does everyone say about RSV shots for preemies. I have not seen

anything on Sheri's website. Is it dangerous (the shot)? Personally

i would never inject my child with it but i have heard it is mandatory

for preemies. I also have two friends with infants that got RSV this

year (not preemies, no daycare, and both breastfeeding, however BOTH

are vaccinated). Scary. Just wondered if anyone had any information

on shot.
