Two Women Die After Receiving Cervical Cancer Vaccine

The death of two young women who received the cervical cancer vaccination

is causing some in the U.K. to question a strategy that calls for hundreds

of thousands of schoolgirls to receive the shot next fall, the Daily Mail

reports.

The young women who died received the vaccination, marketed under the name

Gardasil, in Germany and Austria, respectively. The European Medicines

Agency has not released their ages.

The two deaths follow the deaths of three U.S. females, ages 12, 19 and 22,

who were reported to have died days after receiving Gardasil, which

protects against the human papillomavirus — believed to be the leading

cause of cervical cancer — was administered.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently reported that 28 women

miscarried after receiving the vaccine.

Neither U.S. nor European health officials have directly linked the deaths

or miscarriages to Gardasil. The FDA has said there is no reason to

reexamine approval of the drug.

A spokesman for Merck, maker of Gardasil, told the Daily Mail there were no

plans to change the company's recommendation on use of the vaccine.

A jab that could be given to hundreds of thousands of schoolgirls this

autumn was at the centre at a safety scare last night following the deaths

of two young women.

European regulators are investigating the " sudden and unexpected " deaths of

the women who received Gardasil, one of two jabs to protect against

cervical cancer licensed for use in the UK.

The vaccine has been hailed as a breakthrough by the Department of Health,

which is backing an annual programme of vaccination for girls aged 11 to 13

years starting in September.

The jab is already available privately and a thirteen-year-old girl from

London became the first in the country to receive the cervical cancer

vaccine in 2006. Hollie 's mother, , paid £450 for her to have

the jab after seeing her own mother battle against cancer.

The European Medicines Agency (EMEA) said one of the young women who

received Gardasil died in Germany while the other was in Austria. It has

not released their ages.

It follows the deaths of three young women aged 12, 19 and 22 who were

reported to have died in the U.S. days after Gardasil was administered,

with 1,700 patients suffering " adverse reactions " . There were no previous

recorded deaths in Europe.

The EMEA said: " In both cases, the cause of death could not be identified.

" No causal relationship has been established between the deaths of the

young women and the administration of Gardasil. "

A spokesman said 1.5million people had been given the vaccine in Europe.

She said there were no plans to change advice on the use of the vaccine.

The UK vaccination programme will protect girls against the

sexually-transmitted human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer.

It should help cut up to 1,000 deaths a year from the disease.

Gardasil, made by Merck, is one of the jabs to be used initially. The other

is Cervarix, made by Glaxo-Kline.

Dr Kitchin, medical director at Sanofi Pasteur MSD, which markets

Gardasil, said: " The authorities in the two countries have looked

intensively at these two cases and have not established a causal link, and

this has been endorsed by the EMEA.

" The fact that the EMEA is not taking any action on the back of this should

be seen as reassuring that the product remains safe. "

I live in the US and I've followed news of the cervical cancer vaccine very

closely. I have never heard of any deaths linked to this. If you have some

evidence of this - not just unsubstantiated allegation, please post it so

we can all investigate this as it deserves to be.

My granddaughter was admitted to the hospital yesterday with severe

bleeding. She had lost so much blood she was passing out. The injection had

messed up her hormones so badly. She had bled for three weeks then it

started heavier. She is now on other medication to stop the bleeding and

repair the damage to her hormones. This injection may cause bad side

effects with these girls for the rest of their live. After seeing this

article I am certainly afraid for her.

millions in this drug and want to see a return and that they have 'friends

in high places'.

The answer is simple - DON'T let them force this jab, or any other, on your

child until IT'S proven safe. Remember that your child does not yet,

anyway, belong to the State.

If my daughters were still that young I would not allow them to have this

vaccine. The general public is being used as a 'guinea pig' to see how

effective this vaccine is and what are the dangers. We never did find out

if the Blairs 'sprog' was given the MMR vaccine.

It's time that more research was done into prostate cancer cure and

prevention. Many more men die each year due to this desease than cervical

cancer.

No way are they forcing me to have my daughter vaccinated. Teaching her to

be sexually responsible will have a far more beneficial effect on her health.

Why doesn't our government reinstate girls' sense of self worth in this

country? Get to the health issues that affect a far greater proportion of

girls...STDs, unwanted pregnancies, binge drinking, drug taking. All based

in my opinion on a system that teaches girls they are only worth what they

look like as a sex object. Selling girls as commodities and pretending to

care by offering cervical cancer jabs leaves me feeling pretty bitter and

cynical.

If children are taught to abstain from sex until they have reached full

maturity, and even then make sure the male partner uses a condom even if

the girl is on other contraception, then this vaccine shouldn't be needed

because they won't catch the STD that causes cervical cancer.

EMEA says clearly that there is no link between Gardasil and the tragic

deaths of 2 young women.

Until someone proves that there is anyting wrong with this vaccine my

daughters will have the jab when its ofered - if you have seen the effects

of cervical cancer then the vaccine makes perfect sense and is a genuine

advancement.

No way would I allow this to be injected into my girls either... they

cannot make this compulsory.

Before people start condemning these drugs they should speak to women old

and young who have been diagnosed with pre cancerous cells on their cervix.

Ask them what treatment they have had to have in order to prevent cervical

cancer developing.

If these drugs work then it is well worth the risk but girls have to be

vaccinated at a young age before they become sexually active. I know there

will be mothers throwing their arms up in anger saying that their daughter

would never do anything like that. Well I know different. I work in that

sector. I am not saying that every young girl will become sexually active

at an early age but parents should not take the risk!

licence to get pregnant? It is nothing to do with pregnancy but instead

protects women against cancer, thereby saving lives.

Parental choice should rule the day. This should never be until several

years of research have been undertaken. In my humble opinion, 11-13 years

is far too early to be messing about with pre-pubescent girls' bodies.

This if proven is tragic and needless. When will governments learn that one

size does not fit all. Some people are even allergic to penicillin and it's

the same with multiple vacines, it's just to save money no matter what the

cost to the family. It is enough that a child gets over each as they are

not robots and have different immune systems to cope with it all. (remember

the chaps on the trial drugs that nearly died, just shows what a concoction

of poison some of it is).
