,

That is an incredible story about the pistachio nut. It really shakes what

little faith one can muster up these days for the medical profession. I was

watching some show the other day and a doctor made a comment " well, sometimes

Mom knows best " and I thought Sometimes???? Aargh...

You were lucky, some people have had their kids taken away from them because

the hospital will report people that don't have their kids vaccinated and

they go through hell getting them back, courts, $, custody battles...it is

not good in all places. Get one nurse or Dr that thinks it is wrong and

neglectful to not vaccinate and you are in a heap of trouble, all depends on

where you live I guess.

I just say, yes they are up to date and if they go into it, the Dr has the

exemption letter in the files.

-- Re: Re: The lies about vaccination was New Member

Here are my experiences on the subject of other parents and vaccine issues,

and hospitals and vaccine issues:

1. I've never been asked by a parent if my child is up-to-date on his

shots. They only find out I'm no-vax if I offer the information

voluntarily. I don't usually bring it up, unless I get a comment like " Why

is your child never sick? Seems like mine is ALWAYS sick! " My answer is

always that he was breastfed exclusively for the first 8 months of his life,

and he still breastfeeds now, at 26 months.

2. I've been promising I'd post this story, and here it is: My son inhaled

part of a pistachio on Christmas night. We rushed him to the nearby Urgent

Care facility (only about 5 blocks away, and it was snowing like crazy at

the time). The urgent care doc never even asked if we were current with our

shots... they just did a quick intake on him and took him back to the exam

room. At that time the doc felt pretty sure my son hadn't actually inhaled

any of the nut, even though he was wheezing. He proceeded to prescribe

antibiotics for him and sent us home. After several visits with a

pediatrician (my 2 year old actually ASKED me to take him to the doctor),

where I'd tell them my son is NOT sick, does NOT need antibiotics, is

wheezing because he has a foreign body in his lungs, one ped decided I may

be right when she could not hear breath sounds in his right lung. (At every

visit they'd casually mention " Oh yeah, you don't vaccinate. " , but never

made a huge deal over it.) She immediately sent us to the local Children's

Hospital to have it investigated further.

At the hospital, during intake they asked if he was up-to-date on his shots,

to which I replied " Well, he's up-to-date according to MY schedule, which is

we don't vaccinate. " They didn't even flinch.. just noted it in the file and

went on with the other questions. Not once was it ever mentioned that they

would refuse to admit him because of the vaccine issue. Of course, the

x-ray didn't show anything in the lungs, because x-rays don't pick up things

such as nuts.... the doctors that examined my son that day thought I was

being a paranoid parent, and didn't think anything was wrong with my son

because he was all smiles, walking around (not running like normal though...

if he tried to run, he'd take two steps and plop to the ground, completely

out of breath) and flirting with the nurses. They sent us home and said

they'd call to schedule something for us in the next couple of weeks.

Here I was in my 2nd trimester of pregnancy, sitting up all night every

night with my son, holding him in a semi-upright position so that he could

breathe with a foreign body in his lungs, while I was not sleeping a wink

for fear if I fell asleep he'd quit breathing altogether and I'd lose him.

This had been going on for a month while I was trying to convince someone to

help us, and I was NOT going to wait another 2 weeks for something to be

done about it. So, I called the ear-nose-throat department at the hospital

and BUGGED them... not daily, but HOURLY that day after we got home from the

hospital. They finally called me back that same afternoon (a Friday) and

scheduled us in for the following Tuesday for an " exploratory bronc " --

because they were just SO SURE I was wrong and they weren't REALLY going to

find that anything had been aspirated.

During admittance to the hospital for surgery, nothing was ever mentioned

about the vaccine issue. It really was a non-issue the whole time. The

frustration for me was that no one believed me that my son had inhaled a

pistachio, even though I SAW him inhale it. They even had my husband, who

also witnessed him inhale it, convinced that it was in our heads.... even

while I was carrying my crying two-year-old to the ER to watch him be put

under general anesthesia, the surgeon proceeded to tell me they weren't

going to find anything and treated me like I was putting my child through

undue stress for nothing. The hardest thing I've ever done in my life is

hold my child down on the operating table while he squirmed and cried as

they were putting him under with a gas mask.... I was so offended they

thought I'd let him endure that for nothing. Less than thirty minutes

later, the surgeon emerged from the ER to the lobby to find me, with a cup

in her hand... it had the pistachio piece in it. She saved it, and even

took pictures " for the baby book " . How nice of her....

The surgeon escorted my husband and me to my son's bedside in recovery where

he was just coming too. When he saw me he immediately asked to nurse, so I

sat down in the rocking chair and began to nurse him. The nurses and

surgeon were almost dumbfounded that my two-year-old settled right down and

began to nurse with no problems, and seemed to be coming out of the

anesthesia so easily. It was then that the surgeon finally got a look of

guilt over her face, and commended me for still nursing after two years --

like that was the first time she was convinced I was actually a good mom.

She stated she thought that's why he handled the surgery so well and why he

was recovering so quickly from the anesthesia. I was thinking in the back

of my mind.... well, yeah.... that and the fact that I haven't vaccinated

him to make his lungs and immune system suppressed. But I didn't say that

out loud, I just let it be.

By the time we got home from the hospital that night, you couldn't even tell

my kiddo had been through surgery that day. He was eating everything in

sight, as he had gone almost 24 hours with no food or breast milk (which is

why he was crying as I took him to the ER... he'd been begging me to nurse

him). The next day he was back to RUNNING everywhere he went, and he

hasn't stopped running since!

The purpose of telling this story is two-fold. First, don't be afraid that

a hospital or medical facility won't treat your child because they haven't

been vaccinated. Honestly, even I was surprised at how NOT an issue it was,

and I was fully prepared to go in fighting and clawing on the subject... I

didn't have to. Secondly, if you KNOW something isn't right with your

child, don't let a health care provider convince you you're wrong and that

they know your child better than you do. That's just absurd. Stand your

ground and be firm about your child's health care... both when they don't

need something that is being pushed in your face AND when they truly NEED

intervention.

Another case in point along these same lines: My neighbor, who knows my

whole story, took her 21 month old to the doctor a few weeks ago because he

seemed to be wincing in pain a lot, and covering his groin area when getting

diaper changes, as if he was in pain. Their pediatrician told the mom that

the little boy was just " vying for attention, all boys do that " (21 MONTHS

OLD... COME ON!!!) and there was absolutely nothing wrong with him. My

neighbor told me that if she had not known my story, and how hard I had to

press to have my child taken care of, she would have believed the doctor and

dropped the subject. But because she knew in her gut that her child wasn't

trying to get attention, but truly seemed to be in pain, she decided to take

him to another doctor for a 2nd opinion. That doctor actually ran tests,

and last week, her child went in to surgery for a hernia repair..... he'd

had the hernia since birth. He's a different kid today, running around and

playing and energetic. I've been babysitting him for a year, and I've never

seen him with so much energy... he can keep up with my kid now! Thank

goodness she listened to her mommy instinct, too!

But if, when you go into an ER, they ask if she is up to date with

her vaccines - just say yes. She is according to your schedule.

Don't even discuss it. Just say she is up to date. PERIOD. They

don't need to know anything else. The have been pushed to push

vaccines and ask these questions.

What if they don't look at something because you say that they are all

vaccinated. I am new to this so I don't know all the ins and outs however I

don't think lying is good. Maybe you should call your local ER/Hospital and

see what their policy is before you find yourself ever down that road. We

called two of my local hospitals and one wouldn't even bat an eye and the

other says that we should vaccinate to prevent problems. I know which

hospital I will be going to if I need any of their services..

Just a thought,

My pediatrician tells me that they should be up to date too. In fact, most

of my friends even said that. I was just offering an opinion for those who

don't want to go down the path of lying to health care workers. I have

never heard of someone being refused based on vaccinations however I live in

an area that it might be a little more common.

If they did refuse then I would sue. That is ridiculous. They are here to

help not judge.

Up to date on vaccines? And you are not? Yes, that is a lie. They are not

up to date. Up to date means current on all shots. I have not received

harassment but have come across people who judge me and all I have to ask is

a few questions regarding the detrimental effects of vaccines and they can't

even answer. The last thing I say is that ignorance is bliss but when it

comes to my kids, I will research and find the healthiest way to protect my

kids and if that means not putting toxins and possibly harming their immune

system, then so be it. So far, I have yet found one person who could answer

my questions. One person said the word " child abuse' kind of under her

breath. Again, I came back with what I am doing to strengthen their immune

system while she is injecting numerous toxins into her precious babies blood

system and making them undergo stress on the body that a little helpless

infant should never have to experience. Yeah, I am the child abuser. That

shut her up.

I can get pretty cranky when it comes to other's view on my decisions and I

have yet to find someone who will battle. Of course, I have put more than

100 hours of research into vaccinating and I doubt any other mom who does

vaccine puts in a quarter of that.

My opinion is bring it on.

There are other situations that you might want to be prepared to give answers

for: camps, Scouts, school trips, sports, etc. I remember getting a Cub Scout

form where they asked about vaccines. As I pondered what to put, I heard another

parent say " oh, I can't remember all these dates. I'm just going to put up to

date. " No one questioned them at all. I might have put that, too, at first but

as the years go by, I'm more adamant about them knowing the truth. I now put

" exempt " where they ask about vaccines and on the parts where they ask for

authorization to treat your child in case of emergency or for any additional

info you want them to have, I clearly put " except no vaccines are to be given,

not even tetanus. " The only time anyone asked for further paperwork was for

Scouts camp--they had their own exemption form (kind of strange since there are

no laws requiring vaccines for Scouts!).

I think these medical professionals need to hear that parents are rejecting

vaccines. I don't explain myself to them, although depending on the situation

and my mood, I might comment that I really don't get why how injecting toxic

substances in children makes them healthy. I know it's tempting to try to avoid

discussing it, but I am for letting them know the truth upfront.

Good to know. Thanks!

I would def prefer " exempt " over " up to date " because I would want to know

if there is an outbreak. Chances are they will call those that are exempt

first because these children need to be removed first. I will definitely

note this in our file though.

Thanks!

There are other situations that you might want to be prepared to give

answers for: camps, Scouts, school trips, sports, etc. I remember getting a

Cub Scout form where they asked about vaccines. As I pondered what to put, I

heard another parent say " oh, I can't remember all these dates. I'm just

going to put up to date. " No one questioned them at all. I might have put

that, too, at first but as the years go by, I'm more adamant about them

knowing the truth. I now put " exempt " where they ask about vaccines and on

the parts where they ask for authorization to treat your child in case of

emergency or for any additional info you want them to have, I clearly put

" except no vaccines are to be given, not even tetanus. " The only time anyone

asked for further paperwork was for Scouts camp--they had their own

exemption form (kind of strange since there are no laws requiring vaccines

for Scouts!).

I am too and to be honest, I like to spout off what I know and what I may

need to do more research on. I have asked a few questions to my PD and he

didn't know the answer and I thought that was crazy. Why do something if

you don't know why you are doing it? He is out to make money and while I

can't blame him as his family needs to eat too, I do not need to put my

trust and the health and safety of my kids in jeopardy.

I remember the first time I brought up dessicated liver to him. He about

fell off his chair. He couldn't understand why I would want to make all of

our food when it was readily available (and in organic form) on the shelf.

My question to him was, Would he like to eat bananas out of a jar or food

that has been sitting on the shelf for up to 6 months? " I don't recall his

reply but it probably was something like no.

I have no problem sharing my views with anyone who will listen and those

that do not still get an earful at times. It is our duty as mothers and

father to get the word out. I wish someone had informed me 13 years ago when

I blindly and voluntarily stripped my newborn son so the nurse could give

him his shots. I still get emotional when I think about it.

Ha. If I used that as an excuse in my life than my 13 year old would be

trying it.

I could picture this.

I ask my son, " Did you go to school today? "

He says, " yes " .

I say, " then why did the school call and say you missed 2-6 period? "

He says, 'because I skipped those " .

I say, " But you just said that you went to school. "

He says, " I did, I went to school and then left for the day. "

I say, " but that is a lie Tyler and lying is unacceptable. "

He says, " I did go to school as far as I was concerned.'

My son would lose a few privileges as well as me taking on a whole new

approach to questioning. I don't beat around the bush and I don't let

people assume esp when it comes to the health of my child. I called the

hospital that is closest to me and they do not have any problems with it so

no need to lie, at least in my opinion.

We all are free to raise our kids a certain way. I just prefer to be

upfront and honest.

Yes, but that won't help you get emergency care if you need it and

There is an attitude that will be taken towards your son.

Winnie - very well put. I also think you are exactly right that when the kids

get older, vaccines do not seem like such a big deal to parents. I have no idea

what the percentage is but I would not be surprised if most parents after the

shots to get into school if they stopped them also. Maybe not because they are

anti-vaccine but just because they are mostly boosters and most teenagers and

adults do not do them. This makes me wonder then why we give them to our

kids....if we do not get the boosters as we get older and the vaccine wears off

and we are no longer protected anyways, why take the chance to give them to our

babies???? Another reason for me to think twice about doing anymore with my

kids.....

You know I didn't even get a notice when Chicken pox was going around

the school last year. I did when she was in preschool but haven't

gotten any since she started elementary school. She is in third grade

now. They know she isn't vaxed and we haven't had any problems or

le, I totally agree with you. It makes me sick to my stomach thinking

about all of the research I did on things like what car seat to buy and what

stroller got the best ratings and I never thought twice about researching the

vaccines. It honestly never occurred to me to question them and all it would

have taken was someone to mention something negative or to tell me they didn't

vaccinate and I would have done my research before my son went through 6 months

of vaccines.

I do understand Sheri's point as far as just saying you are up to date rather

than getting into a vaccine debate when you're in an emergency situation.

Although, what is the point in allowing exemptions if people have to spend so

much time lying or defending their decision not to vaccinate?

Exactly! As I sit here 8 months PG with my third my mind is totally on vit

k, erthryamycin ointment, and vaccines I have realistically spent over 100

hours at least in the past month researching this. My mom called me and

asked me about a few things and I realized that I have totally forgotten

about everything else. This has consumed me and even my husband. We even

had to interview homeopathic drs. And that was an exhausting week. This

pregnancy is by far the fastest to date.

But see, that is just it. There should be no debate and if my child is

lying there suffering from anything, any good dr or nurse would realize that

medical help comes first then ask questions however my point is that one

should never lie or let someone assume anything about a person's medical

history. I just can't see anything good coming from that. Like I said

before, I am from the Bay Area where there are many non vaxers so maybe I am

just lucky and my hospital is more cooperative. I don't know. I can't

honestly say since I have not been put in that position but to be honest, I

pity the person who stops to care about my choice of not vaxxing while my

child lays in front of her holding onto their life.

I think we will always defend as we are going against the norm. I think

that is why I really wanted to make sure I had the answers because if

someone asks me about it then I want to be prepared. Obviously I researched

to make the decision but the bonus is now I can go toe to toe with a person

who feels strongly for it.

scares me more than anything. Is it possible for your children to be taken away

from you if you do not vax or if you stop vax altogether???
