Guest guest
Fiona, adhesions form after surgery mostly - they can also form from endometriosis. It's your body's defense against foreign bodies a lot like what forms around the implants in our breasts. I had surgery for endometriosis and they removed my left ovary at the same time because it had an endometrial cyst in it that was getting bigger and bigger and would eventually have caused my ovary to burst. It was very painful. After the surgery I seemed to be fine and had no pain for a while. 6 months later I got implants and within 4 months of getting them I was back under the knife for a full hysterectomy. The pain returned from what I thought was endometriosis. When they opened me up they saw maybe a speck or two of endo and the rest was adhesions. It looked sort of like a spider web of tissue that was attached to my cervix and bladder and colon and intestines and it was binding up everything in there. I felt so much better after the surgery. Then again within a few months I was in severe pain and had a 2nd surgery and the adhesions were 10 X as bad as the last one. It took 2 doctors and a 3rd one on call just in case they had problems with my bowels and bladder. The surgery took several hours and after removing all the adhesions they put in something called Interceed that was supposed to cover the areas and keep adhesions from forming then eventually turn into a gel and pass back out of me. Within a few months again I was in pain and under the knife. Same thing, different doctor. This time I was still in pain after the surgery and couldn't walk because of something they did to a nerve that feeds my left leg. Anyway, I was able to walk again after a few weeks and that was my last surgery (I think?? I swear I've lost track - I kept thinking I had another one but I don't remember for sure!). So, I'm pretty darn sure I have adhesions again because I know how it feels. Boy, I told you my life story didn't I? Sorry, I hope I explained what adhesions are anyway!
