Hi Beth,

For the constipation you should try Natural calm by Natural vitality

_www.petergillham.com_ (http://www.petergillham.com) . We got this from our

Chiropractor and love it! You just put a little of the powder in warm water,

mix

well and drink. I find that kids like it better if you put some honey in it.

It

tastes like warm lemonade. It is a highly absorbable form of magnesium.

Great for constipation and sore throats. We get the sweet lemon flavor and we

all take it when we feel like we need it. I have heard that it helps many

sleep better but I didn't notice a difference myself. They make a special kind

for kids and babies also. Just thought you might want to know about this.

Tonya - thanks so much for the link. Both of my boys but more my older son (3

1/2 yrs) have it. Once my oldest got potty trained, it did seem to help but he

still has trouble. I may try this for both of them. Sorry if this is to much

info BUT, my oldest son (when he was in diapers) would strain so hard that he

would ry out and start to sweat. He would literally have wet hari by the end of

the ordeal. Most of the time he never even passed a pebble. Once he got potty

trained, he does better but I still hear him straining and when I go in there he

says it hurt really bad and sometimes I see very little traces of light blood

when I clean him.......I spoke to the doctor about this and they say it is not

uncommon for kids that age to have trouble and that I should not worry.....well,

I do worry about it because of how bad he says it hurts and the little bit of

blood. He does go everyday which is good. Also, I just thought the onstipation

was related

to the formula since I did not breastfeed. However, he has been off of formula

since a year old and although he is a little better, I do not think the formula

had anything to do with it. Also, I have checked for hemmoriods and I do not see

any...I thought that may be causing the blood.

I will try to product mentioned below.....I know they say chlorine can cause a

magnesium deficiency and we do swim alot in the summer and he takes swimming

lessons...

Much Love,

Beth

Beth, also look at if your son is getting enough water and fiber in his

diet. It could be as simple as adding a bowl of oatmeal every morning

to help bulk up his stools to keep water in the colon instead of it

being drawn out and drinking plenty of water to keep him well hydrated.

Your son could have internal hemmoroids which could bleed a little bit

when he has to strain so much, many adults have them as well.

Doris - thanks...he does not drink alot of water....well at least not as much as

he should. He mostly drinks milk but he drnks maybe 2 glasses a day of water.

I do give him oatmeal for breakfast, although not everyday. However, I have

noticed if I give him oatmeal a few days in a row it does seem to help.

Does anyone know if there is a fiber powder (like benefiber for adults) that we

can give to kids???

Hi Beth,

We give our kids psyllium husks and Manitoba Harvest's Hemp protein powder

with fiber in their yogurts or daily smoothies. There are numerous hot

cereals like barley oats, steel cut oats, teff cereal, etc that you can add

fruit with and it will add to the fiber.

Not sure how old he is but you can also make your own porridge with ground

up grain (any grain) and beans (any beans) and then add your fruit. We have

been doing that since your youngest was 6/7 months old.

As for a specific fiber powder, I would check Whole Foods.

I am almost positive when I say that it is the milk that is making him

constipated! This is not only from all the research that I have done

on milk, but also from personal experience with my little girl. Before

I knew the truth about vaccines she got everything on the list and when

she went to whole milk at 1 it backed her right up! I am positive it

is because of a reaction to a vaccine at some point in the schedule, as

well as a milk intolerance. Now she can handle the little amounts that

she gets, in cereal and such. We don't drink much milk since

researching into that. In one of the introductory articles that Sheri

sent when I joined it mentioned a DR presrcibing flax seed to help with

constipation. I believe it was 2 tsp. a day. You can mix the flax

into a lot of things if you get it ground. Really though you should

try eliminating the milk from their diet for two weeks and see if that

makes a difference, again just my 2cents.

Beth,

What are his favorite types of foods? Any strong dislikes? After my second

child I read the book Super Baby Food and decided to really change our way

of eating. I have gotten completely away from refined flours and sugars and

cook with only whole grains. I actually plan our day's meals (including

snacks) according to the food pyramid so that I can ensure we are getting

all that we need. I can get a little anal about our diet but when we go on

vacation we feel pretty awful.

Let me think on that. How old are they again?

Hi Beth,

So I got out one of my favorite books (super immunity for kids by Dr. leo

galland) and he suggests:

1 tsp of magnesium citrate for 10 days. This is a sublaxative dose. A 4 or

5 year old can manage 1 T each day.

Beans-loads of different kinds. These also help you process the EFA into

the correct prostagladins. My kids love to snack on fresh beans and beans

(garbanzo beans work the best) baked in olive oil and kelp.

Fiber enriched foods:

Fruits:

Apple with skin, Raisins, Rasberries, and Pears with skin, and oranges are

top 5 in the Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements

Cooked veggies:

Spinach, green beans, brocooli, sweet pots, and broccoli

Lentils are wonderful too!

Just a few things that you can try adding to their diet, if they are

willing.

Flaxseed oil will go rancid pretty quickly so make sure you will use it

before that happens. I made the mistake of buying the biggest bottle and

then having to throw it out.

You can buy the seeds like Marci suggested and grind them yourself. Again,

these seeds will go rancid if you don't use them pretty quickly after

grinding and keep them in the freezer to ensure freshness.

Beth,

That is great that he will try anything! Better to start them as young as

possible so they are used to the tastes and do not get accustomed to the

sugars and salt that are in processed foods.

For us, lunch is a smaller serving than a dinner dish would be. Snacks are

smaller portions than lunch.

I will send look through some and send to you offlist.

Beth,

The raisins from WF's do not have sugar, at least not the ones I buy. I can

get the brand next time I go. I take them out and put them in a container

so I no longer have the paper.

Do you mean Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron?? I was going to suggest to get

that one as it started me out on everything I do now. Before the book, I

have never heard of quinoa, teff, or amaranth, and now they are staples in

my house.

Let me think on the sleep and check my books for it. I haven't come across

that issue but I might here in a few weeks. ; )

Beth,

For my son, sleep problems came from dairy products. When he was two, I took him

off all dairy (except yogurt) and after three weeks (two weeks was not long

enough--no change whatsoever) it was like a switch flipped and he began to sleep

through the night. He actually started to go to sleep without clinging to me,

too. He didn't stay the perfect sleeper and he's now 18 and never sleeps, it

seems!! but that helped a lot. Plus, he also had bowel problems from the milk

but not constipation, but almost diarrhea now that I look back. After taking him

off the dairy, he had normal poops for the first time. I got so used to his

loose ones, I didn't realize it wasn't normal.

Anything with grapes in it also used to make him and his brothers wild.

I do not have a health foods store close to me.....but Korger is getting more

and mroe organic foods....although, the raisin's there still have alot of sugar

in them. The closest whole foods store is about 30 mins away......

Thanks for all your help le, if you happen to find the brand of raisin's,

let me know. I found organic cheese crackers and things like that for kids at

our store but I can not tell if there are still actually good for them or

not......

Also, I have my appointment with the ped. Monday, so if you have any advice or

suggestions on how to handle this appointment, let me know. This is for her to

fill out the paperwork to try to get my youngest cleared w/o the vax.....

Winnie - that is interesting...here is a short version as to what is going on

with my oldest son and his sleep...

Keep in mind he was on soy formula (although, now that I know about soy I regret

that) but he did not sleep rom day 1. It woud take us forever to lay him down

at night....we would have to rock him to sleep and then it was almost as if he

knew we were laying him down and he would wake up.....finally at a year old, my

hubby and I let him " cry it out " and this worked for awhile. Then he started

doing it again....we let him cry it out again.....it worked for awhile....not,

he will go to bed but he makes me stay in there for a little bit...then he wakes

up throughout the whole night crying because he is so exhausted. Most of the

time when I go in there he settles down but sure enough, he wakes back up

crying.....this goes on all night. I am lucky to get about 4-5 hrs and that is

broken up......he stopped taking naps at 2 yrs old and it is a huge chore

everynight to get him to go to bed. Then, he will go through spurts where he

sleeps in his bed just

fine....then back to the routine I jsut mentioned above. He even tells me he

wants t be with me...like he is scared. He tells me he will miss me....things

like that. I am wondering if this new phase is becaues his dad left for his job

16 months ago and he is afraid I am going to leave also.....

Any ideas????

Love,

Beth

Yes, let him sleep with you. All my kids did. It can be wearing because then you

end up falling asleep before you want to, or if you leave after they've fallen

asleep, they wake up looking for you. But I'm a firm believer in the family bed.

My oldest never liked to sleep alone so we had him share a bed with his

brothers. I think he was finally ten when we insisted he sleep in his own

room--poor kid always slept with a light on. He's relatively normal now. Second

son, never a problem. Third one a nervous Nellie even now at 12 but getting

better. Last one shares a room with him but slept with us until probably 7.

I also would nix the raisins and maybe look at whatever other food he eats a lot

of. Something's affecting his system into not settling at night. You might never

figure it out so at the very least give him the security of being with you. It

might seem like forever but it won't be.

Beth,

My daughter was on a milk based formula with no problems, and when we

made the switch to regular milk at 1 yo she had problems (not knowing

whatI know now) we put her back on the formula until she was 14 mos and

then switched to soy. I didn't give her any milk to drink until she

was almost three you, and although she tolerates it ok, we don't drink

milk on a regular basis. The thing that helped her stools even more

was when she started on the juice plus gummie vitamins. If she looks

like she is getting backed up we give her a few more than usual and she

does great. As far as your son not sleeping well, I would suggest

chiropractic care. If you are already getting it I would suggest

finding a doctor that does the B.E.S.T. technique. To find a pediatric

chiropractor go to http://www.icpa4kids.org/why.htm chiropractic care

also helped with my daughters constipation.

I keep hearing on this site in suttle ways, that some parents are regretting

giving their children soy in any form??? My 14 month old didn't take too well

to whole milk at 1 so we switched her to soy milk and it worked wonders on her

tummy! What is the problem with soy?

I have read where soy causes hormone issues...even more in boys. I did not know

this when I gave him soy but I guess it can make them go through puberty as

early as 3. My son is 3 1/2 and he gets pimples on his chin....wondering why

this is since he is so young...

Hi Rina,

Here are a couple of websites where you can read why soy is not the health

food it is touted to be:

I'm a vegan, I don't think there is a problem with soy, I think there

is a problem with processed soy, soy that has been mutilated,

hydrogenated, oils, soy lecithin and crap, but not with simple soy,

such as soymilk made at home, or soy bean nuts, or tofu. There are

more of us that are intolerant to milk, cow's milk is for calf, as

goat milk is for those, pig for that, cat for kittens, dogs for

puppies, we all drink wean from our mom and wean, and cereal with

soymilk is a whole lot better....
