Guest guest
The only thing I know about it is that with my kids having a bone marrow failure syndrome fifths disease (Parvo B19) can cause an Aplastic anemia crisis for them-one from which they may or may not recover. I do not know exactly how it affects kids with other immune deficiencies-I do know that immune compromised folks can get it again and again.. We had to avoid piano lessons at the school where the boys took piano b/c of outbreaks. ~Pattie~ " What matters is not great deeds, but great love. I have to admit it makes me nervous to see Donovan sitting at a table full of red, itchey kids. I WANT to beleive they are not contagious.......... Anyway, the letter also stated that it is only dangerous to pregnant woment and children with immune def of any kind........so HOW MUCH more dangerous is it? Should I be more concerned about this than the other parents? Olivia had this as a baby, and it wasnt the biggest deal in the world...course that was before I had any kids with asthma, or PID, or anything like that. NOw every illness seems like it takes on a bigger meaning to me......and Olivia had been sick, with head cold type symptoms, now Savannah and brennan have it........and i wonder if this could be the precursor to Fifths................there isnt any way to tell unless the rash breaks out, though, is there? valarie _____
Guest guest
Valarie, There are some potentially serious complications of Fifths disease if your child is chronically neutropenic. Fifth disease can also be asymptomatic in neutropenic patients---but still have negative consequences. If neutropenia is an issue, I would check in with your immuno/hem/MD and get further instructions. If PID is the only issue, you may still want to inquire generically with your immuno to make sure this is an ok place for your child to be. Fifths disease is not at all serious for most kiddoes, so I wouldn't panic at all....but I would look for mor info. It would probably make me uncomfortable as well----the other parents are not as familiar with your situation as you are. Guest guest
Usually there is no precursor to Fifth's. Sometimes there is a mild fever, rarely some joint pain. Otherwise it just starts with the intense slapped-cheek type rash and then progresses to a lacy rash arms & legs and then to other areas of the body. The intitial rash lasts several days to a week, but can continue to recur for weeks, even months. Recurrence is usually due to exposure to heat (bath, water, sun). The letter you received was right that most cases are contagious prior to the onset of the rash. Unfortunately, the incubation period is usually 4-14 days, but can be as long as 20 days. So I guess you've got a little while to keep an eye on you kids! If your PIDer does develop symptoms it would definitely warrant a call to the immuno. Complications from Fifth's are rare, but are found in pregnant women and immune compromised individuals. Usually no treatment is needed, but for chronic infection in PIDers, immunoglobin may be be effective. -Rogena (Mom to 4 boys, including Cole -Partial IgA Def, GERD, possible Celiac) > > so this is running rampant in school right now.......esp in the kdg > rooms. the letter than came home about it says that it is no longer > contagious once the rash appears(though one friend said her dr told > her to keep her son home until the rash cleared) and its fine to be in > school.
