The hearing, which began in July 2007 and was initially only supposed to last 16 weeks, is to continue into August. Included among the allegations is the suggestion that Dr Wakerfield took blood from a child at a birthday party to use for research purposes without ethics committee approval, and that he failed to disclose to the editor of The Lancet his involvement in MMR litigation and in a patent relating to a new vaccine. The fitness to practice panel will also consider allegations of serious professional misconduct by Professors - and Simon Murch, who worked with Dr Wakefield at the Royal Free Hospital of Medicine in London on the research project from 1996-1998. As has been widely publicised, all three practitioners at the time undertook a study entitled: A new paediatric syndrome: enteritis and disintegrative disorder following measles/rubella vaccination. This was followed by the publication of a paper in The Lancet sparking a national outcry among parents who feared the triple vaccine could put their children at risk of autism. The Panel is to inquire into allegations that the three practitioners undertook this research without proper ethical approval, failed to conduct the research in accordance with the application submitted to the ethics committee, and failed to treat the children admitted into the study in accordance with the terms of the approval given by the ethics committee. The allegations to be raised at the hearing are many - including the claim that some of the investigations carried out on the children, such as colonoscopies and lumbar punctures, were contrary to their clinical interests. Today and tomorrow have been set aside as reading days for the panel but the hearing will resume in public session on Thursday. The parents' pressure group JABS stands by Wakefield and colleagues - accusing the GMC of a " witchhunt " . " The GMC had brought the case itself claiming that it was in the public interest. In our view no parent of a child has complained, " says a spokesperson for JABS. She accused the GMC of bringing the case because Wakefield's work had brought to attention " questions over the MMR programme " . " JABS believes that if MMR vaccines had not been mentioned within the [Lancet] report there would have been no criticism of the report and no GMC hearing would be pending for these three doctors.
