, I was just getting ready to post on this topic. From what I have read on

here, most doctors will not preform a circumcision without the shot. However, I

have the same question. I know alot of people on here are not for the

circumcisions but for those of us that would still do them, what are our other

options> I know there was some talk awhile back about the vitamin K drops but

that thye could not be given until a certain age.

Any information would be helpful....

Also, what is the issue with the eye goop? Why is that dangerous???

I'm not an expert, and I don't circ, so it's not been an issue for me, but

from what I've read if the mother has a diet high in Vitamin K (green leafy

veggies), she passes natural vitamin K on to her child. You can further

supplement with food-based supplements that are high in greens. I'm

currently taking one that contains brussel sprouts and kale called

" Cruciferous Complete " by the company Standard Process, Inc. Alfalfa is

also a common vitamin K supp, but my natropath switched me to the brussel

sprout/kale mix after muscle testing me. I'm taking it to help with my own

clotting after birth, as well as to make sure my baby has a good base to

establish his own clotting factor.

From what I understand it takes a couple of days for the baby's clotting

factor to kick in. Waiting until the umbilical cord stops pulsing, or

better yet, until the placenta is delivered to cut the cord is a common way

to make sure your baby has a good source of stem cells and red blood cells

to help them in those early days.

I've also heard people say they used " Bio-K " (

http://www.bioticsresearch.com/en/cms/?236#biok) as an alternative to the

shot, but don't know if they administered it to the baby, or to themselves

before the birth: A natropath/homeopath would know... Sheri, do you know?

I think this has to be ordered by a holistic care provider, too.

Beth,

I don't know that the eye goop is particularly dangerous (haven't researched

it), but at birth the baby's vision is such that it sees best at about the

distance from the mother's breast to her face... so if you administer eye

goop, it can make the baby's vision more limited that it already is and

therefore interfere with bonding in those early hours of breastfeeding.

That's why I choose not to do it... besides the fact that I believe God

makes us perfect and we don't, under normal circumstances, need any outside,

unnautral intervention. My first son didn't have any eye good and his eyes

were bright and clear from birth... never a problem with infection. I

remember the joy of having him look up at me like " Oh mama, that's what you

look like! " and loving every second of that time together!

IF you are planning to circumcise, then I would do one of two things...

1) get the Vit K shot and then do the circ

or

2) wait until after the boy's first week of life before doing the

circumcision

There is a reason why the Jewish wait until the 8th day of life to do a

circumcision. They knew that before then there would be bleeding problems in

the

newborn. After the first week, the baby's own Vitamin K production is

working enough for there not to be bleeding issues. Before this time, the baby

has a high risk of not clotting and having severe bleeding issues.

Are you 100% decided to circumcise? If not, I would research it further, as

the AAP does not endorse circumcision and most insurance companies will NOT

pay for it. The uncirc rate is now around 50% of the US population and even

more in other countries. Even within the Jewish culture there is a movement

towards non-circing Judaism in some of the more progressive sects. There are

many websites that you can visit and I HIGHLY recommend that you find a

video of a circumcision being performed before having it done. There is a big

misconception that a baby feels no pain...one look at one of these videos and

it will be VERY apparent that there is MUCH pain involved and the baby feels

every ounce.

If you have decided to circ and KNOW it's the right thing for your son, then

I would highly recommend that you look into hiring a Rabbi to do the

procedure. You do not have to be Jewish to have a Rabbi do this. They are

very

gentle and much more experienced than most doctors.

when a baby is born to a mother who has chlamydia, there is an increased

risk of eye infection in the newborn, including eventual blindness. This is

why

the antibiotic ointment was given in the first place, but initially it was

only given to babies of moms who were diagnosed chlamydia +...eventually, much

like everything else, it became common practice to give it to ALL newborns

" just in case " .

there is a lot of research that shows that it's not at all that

effective...if you do a google search of " eye ointment newborns " you will find

lots of

studies that prove the rate of infection does not go down with the use.

Fortunately, my first 4 babies were girls. My last was a boy and his father

is Jewish. However, I knew that I could never have my baby circumcised and

even my Jewish husband respected my position. He could never have watched

this very truthful video. But I would have insisted if he had insisted on the

circumcision. I know it's controversial but I just cannot stand the thought

of the pain that they endure. Just makes me feel sick.

from what i understand about it is it's an antibiotic to prevent

gonorrhea transmition (or infection) to the baby's eyes. if you're

in a monogomous relationship (for sure) & both are free of gonorrhea,

there's no reason to administer an antibiotic- which as pointed out

before, can hinder the early bonding (tho many are pursuading parents

to give it after the first hour- instead of refusing it all together).

I asked and they still said no. I can go somewhere else but finding someone

whom I trust is another question. He is okay with slow/no vax so I would

really like to stay with him. We have an appt with him in 3 weeks and we

will discuss it again.

If you are planning on doing the circ right after birth, then I would

consider (not for sure get) doing the vit k shot. If you are doing the circ on

the

8th day, then I think the vit k levels are more on that day. I think that

is why God had the Jews do it on the 8th day. But these are just my opinions.

What about not pointing out he didn’t the shot and doing the circ at the

hospital? Isaac didn’t get the vita K shot, my OB did the circ, no one

asked me anything or said anything. I know he didn’t get the shot too

b/c I had dh shadow the baby the entire time. I don’t trust them.. all

was fine. I don’t know if they were aware I didn’t do the vita k shot

I'm with you, a. I'm sick to my stomach that I circumcised my first two

sons. I blindly did it, the same way I blindly vaccinated--because it's done. I

cannot recommend strongly enough against it.

Out of respect for those that have made the decision to circumcise for

whatever reason, I am politely asking the 'pain and suffering' comments to

end. We all have our reasons for doing it and those that do make the

decision (like me) are not going to in depth reasonings for our decision

even though we feel that we are right for making that decision.

I watched both of my sons being circumcised, figuring I should be there with

them. My OB/GYN did my first son (no anesthetic) and told me each step he would

do and how my son would react, and when he would get quiet, etc. He cut off a

lot.

A different doc did my second son, used an anesthetic, cut off hardly any. Who

would know there were different factors to consider: anesthetic or not, how much

to cut off, etc.

Then I saw a pamplet/book (?) about men who were angry later in life, how they

felt this decision was taken from them, experiences from men who were

circumcised later in life and the reduction of sexual pleasure...well, I'll stop

now because I know religion enters into for some people, but for those who is

Hi, le. I just read this message, but had already posted so I truly

apologize. There's a parallel to me with the vaccine issue because some people

act based on the status quo, not just for religious or personal feelings. There

was no criticism meant, just regret on my part.

Thank you Winnie. I agree with you as well but with us (meaning us on the

board) we are all going against the status quo so to speak with vaccines so

it should be assumed that we are all making the decision to circumcise with

the same prowess that we have for vaccines.

You are right, le. In the end, they are our children and nobody else's. We

have to live with our decisions, no one else does. These are two separate issues

and no more comments from me on the circumcision.

Hi! I'm sure most people on the list are strongly against circumcision

(I don't love the idea, personally), but we're Jewish and thus " have "

to circ. I did a lot of research and decided to go with the Vit K shot

(it's the only one my 8.5 month old has had). Although it's not a

requirement, it is recommended and personally, I'd rather be safe then

sorry with that, yanno?

Like you said, Winnie, some people circ. for religious reasons (2 of

the major 3 world religions do so). I can understand where you're

coming from but I don't think any of us really wanted to get into a

debate about circ. when we were asking our questions. Back to the

topic, though, I'm still unclear on what to do. Would you say that

it's better to give the Vit. K shot despite the side effects if

you'll be circ'ing during your hospital stay? Up until this point,

everyone I've talked to who doesn't think the Vit. K shot is a good

idea, told me that if I'm circ'ing I should go ahead and do it

anyway. Is that the general feeling here, too?
