Vaccinate your children

In response to Wednesday's letter to the editor " `Safer vaccines are needed: "

First, newborns are not receiving live viruses, mercury, aluminum or

aborted fetal tissue. This statement is outrageous and wrong,

Second, only adult influenza vaccine contains traces of mercury. None

of the vaccine for infants and children contains this compound.

Third, all scientific studies of vaccines and autism have found no

link; many have shown that vaccines do not cause autism.

Fourth, at least 13 genes have been associated with autism, and

developmental experts believe 40 percent or more of autism is related

to these genes.

Fifth, the primary cause of the increase in autism since the '70s is

due to renaming children as autistic. Over the past 15 years, the

incidence of mental retardation has decreased as many of these

children are reclassified. Associating increased incidence of autism

with increased vaccination makes no more sense than linking it to

increased use of hair gels.

Sixth, recently a young woman with a rare metabolic disorder was

awarded money from a " vaccine court " for a reaction following

immunization. The court summary stated that this decision was

specifically not an acknowledgment of a link between vaccines and autism,

We have disconnected infants, brain-dead from meningitis, from life

support. We have worked futilely to save children with chicken-pox

that invaded their hearts, lungs, liver and brains. We have seen

babies suffocating in their own fluids from infection and hepatitis.

We have comforted parents holding a blue infant killed by whooping cough.

These are not hypothetical or imagined risks. We have lived them.

Vaccines are safe, effective lifesaving and do not cause autism.

Love your children. Vaccinate them.
