The exercise targets districts neighboring with Democratic Republic of Congo following reports of polio outbreak in parts of Democratic Republic of Congo. Uganda has been free of the Wild Polio Virus since 1996 and was certified Polio-free in October 2006. However, now Uganda's ministry of health says that the country has come under threat of importing the Wild Polio Virus (WPV) from the neighbpuring Democratic republic of Congo (DRC). " It is therefore important that all children below 5 years are immunized and given extra protection if polio is to be kept out of Uganda, " Dr. Sam Zaramba, Uganda's Director General of Health Service stresses. The exercise kicked of today in the districts of Kanungu, Kisoro, Rukungiri, Kabale, Kasese, Bundibugyo, Ntungamo Bushenyi and Mbarara. Dr Zaramba says, " these districts have been identified as being at high risk of wild polio importation. " " The Ministry of Health appeals to district authorities to take this as a matter of urgency and support the District Health Officers to implement preventive and control measures. Community leaders are also urged to be on the look out for children who develop fever and weakness of the limbs and report the nearest Health Unit for investigation and treatment, " pleads Dr Zaramba Women carrying children, some on their backs thronged some immunization posts set up in selected villages, parishes and health units in the targeted districts. In an interview with Africanews.com reporter in Uganda, Dr. Kaguna Amoti, the District Director of Health Services in Mbarara said that close to 53,000 children in his district will be given oral polio vaccine. -------------------------------------------------------- Sheri Nakken, former R.N., MA, Hahnemannian Homeopath Vaccination Information & Choice Network, Nevada City CA & Wales UK Vaccines - http://www.wellwithin1.com/vaccine.htm Vaccine Dangers & Homeopathy Online/email courses
