Last updated: 6:34 p.m., Monday, June 9, 2008 ALBANY -- Families who object to mandatory vaccines will gather Tuesday on the steps of the state Capitol to support a proposed ``philosophical'' exemption to mandatory vaccines. ``It will give parents the ability to choose what vaccinations their children should have,'' said Rudley, who lives in Westchester County and believes vaccines made her son autistic. Nineteen other states allow parents to opt-out of vaccines for their children based on philosophical beliefs including Maine, Vermont and California. Meanwhile, the state Health Commissioner has proposed a bill that would close gaps in the state's immunization program. It is not a major policy shift, according to health officials. The DOH bill, if approved, would: Allow doctors to give vaccines for sexually transmitted diseases without parental consent to patients under 18 who request them. Mandate flu and pneumococcal vaccines for all nursing home employees. Require part-time college students to be immunized for measles, mumps and rubella, like their full-time counterparts. Require meningococcal vaccine for all 7th graders and all students entering college. A section of the proposed DOH law has anti-vaccine advocates rallying because it implies that New York will make all vaccines recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control mandatory. The CDC recommends that children receive 23 doses of vaccines by the time they are 6 years old. The vaccines protect against eight diseases, including polio, hepatitis B, pneumonia and meningitis. Most of the immunizations are already required to attend public school in New York state. However, flu shots and the cervical cancer vaccines are not mandatory in New York, and they won't be under this proposed law, said Hutton, spokeswoman for the DOH. Before making a vaccine mandatory, Hutton said the health department waits until it is affordable and reimbursed by insurance companies, and proven to be safe and effective in the long term. Although all major studies show no link to vaccines and developmental diseases, some parents believe vaccines can cause serious problems like autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. One of the suspected agents is the mercury used as a preservative in vaccines. Although mercury has been removed from most vaccines, autism rates are still increasing. Right now, parents can choose not to vaccinate their children for religious and medical reasons. Some school districts require hearings where parents must prove their religious beliefs. A philosophical exemption would allow parents to more easily opt-out of vaccines. Cathleen F. Guest guest
I believe the vaccine industry is responsible for the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the human race. Personally, I wouldn't give in one inch. Just sticking a needle into someone who has a troubled immune system, is enough to cause harm. Not all the damage is caused by vaccine ingredients. Some of it is caused by violation of the body. Guest guest
Bob, I agree. My response to the paper: The " press " most certainly SUGAR-COATED the reality of the NY forced- vaccine Bill 10942 and left out CRITICAL, important information in regards to how this bill will indeed strip NYers of their rights and force-vaccinate every infant, toddler, child, teen, and soon adults. Every child in the state of NY will be MANDATED to receive the full- blown, deadly CDC recommended vaccine schedule and ALL new vaccines will automatically be added to the insane schedule. The DOH will not take into consideration that vaccinations are never tested on sick children, only 'healthy' children, and no form of medicine, including vaccines, can possibly be a " one-size-fits-all-package " . Children's blood and suffering will be on the hands of every NY agency. School vax-exemptions will be near impossible to get AND those exemptions will NOT hold up for infants and toddlers who receive the most brutal part of the CDC vax schedule. This is NOT just about no- school entry. Every doctors office, peds office, and hospital setting will enforce this public health policy and exemptions do NOT stick in those settings especially when a hospital / MDs office adopts the policy as their own. No rights exist in NY against the public health mandates. We have been told, point blank, that exemptions will not trump the DOH public policies. You also conveniently failed to mention that non-vaccinators are being " tracked " . But it's " not so bad " , is it? Really. No - b/c the DOH " says so. " Just like 'they' exclaimed in 1998 that the NY " birth mandates " weren't all that bad either... meanwhile, NO EXEMPTIONS apply and parents are being threatened to have their babies taken away at birth by the POLICE and handed over to CPS if the parent refuses the " birth mandates " ... b/c the DOH " says so " . Yes! Let us all trust 'them'. Even my assemblyman was stunned by this Bill. His comment directly to me was - well, this IS something, isn't it?... I find it hard to believe they are willing to do this. The assembly did not vote on this today. Their next voting session in Albany is tomorrow and bill 10942 is not on the schedule. Its still " up in the air " as to when they will actually vote on this disastrous bill. But something tells me that it will be another sneak attack. Because the big-money-powerful-pharma-men-dressed-in- black-suits SAY SO. Do your homework - research the SCIENCE - and at the very least, use common sense here. DO YOUR JOB! Guest guest
Hi, I was wondering if someone can help me. I am planning to send my daughter to a catholic school in nj. Here is my dilemma. I already put her immunizations in with the public school (she is all up to date). I did not know the what the laws entailed. I decided on sending her to a catholic school now. My question is will they accept a religious exemption (especially being that she is up to date with all her shots). I want to put the religious exemption in " we believe God gave us our immune sysem and by putting foreign substances into our bodies we are going against God's promise to us. " I know alot of the live vaccines contain aborted fetal tissue, we oppose that as well. I never knew any of this when my daughter was born, this is why she received all her shots. Can someone please help and let me know if they have been in this situation. Can catholic schools reject religious exemptions?
