Wondering about pediatricians that refuse to treat.

I am about to have my second son next month. We will not be

vaccinating him due to the damage done to our first son. I have been

thinking about what to do if and when our pediatrician starts refusing

to see us. So far I have just told him we are going to wait a while,

and he is fine with that, but I know there will come a day when he

will probably tell us to go elsewhere. I want the baby to be seen by

him in the beginning, just to make sure things are healing properly -

circumsicion, belly button, etc., but after that, what's the point in

going unless he is sick? And if he gets sick, couldn't I just take him

to a family doctor or even one of those MedCare Now places. I've gone

to them in the past and been very pleased. Surely they wouldn't care

one way or the other if he was vaccinated. It's not like my son would

be an " official patient " of a certain doctor if we just went in when

he was sick. Any thoughts/experiences on this?

That is basiaclly what we have done. Although mine were older when we

stopped vaxing. We go only when they are sick and about 1/2 the time

the doctor has no appointments and we go to immedicate care. We are

getting ready to take Caden for his Kindergaten check up. it is

required before he can start kindergarten on the fall and it must be

done by a physician (I was hoping we could go to a chiro but we can't.)

I'm sure we will get pressured again (mainly my the nurse practioner

who I can't stand and the other nurses.) The Dr is okay with it??? Go

figure??

Originally (before vaxing), you did take you infant to the Dr at

regular intervals for the first year to make sure things were okay and

that the development of the baby was fine. But that is now mainly used

to give vax.

I would go initally and if you have concerns at any time. Other than

that...stay home and enjoy the new baby!!

Why do you assume that he’ll ask you to go elsewhere? Has he made mention

in the past?

I was worried, well sort of, when I had my second daughter. I took her to

the first appointment when she was about two weeks old or so (to get a

weight check); my doctor and I (he is a family practitioner, not a

pediatrician), discussed vaccines at that time. I told him that I was not

ready to make any decisions (I already knew that she wasn’t to receive any

at all); and we left it at that. That was 16 months ago and we haven’t been

back since. I also have a 3 ½ year old as well. So far, so good. She

hasn’t been back since then either. My husband and I are open to our third

child (when it happens, it happens), and I will likely be taking my other

two children to my first pre-natal with that pregnancy. If my doctor

discusses vaccines at the time, we’ll just say that we are done with them

for good (my doctor is well tuned to my position already, though he may not

agree); I doubt he’ll boot me from his practice; he’s actually quite lovely

and I’m quite fond of him ~ he has respected my birthing plans with both my

two daughters and actually stood up quite proud to the maternity nurses who

are so very accustomed to the routine of cord clamping, vit K, hep b, early

bathing, etc. My doctor, though very mainstream, allowed me to do what ever

I pleased in the hospital. If he does, by the off chance, ask me to leave

his practice, then I will, without hesitation, go elsewhere ~ why would I

want to be with someone who didn’t want to care for me and my children? And

in the interim, I believe that I’m perfectly capable of taking care of my

babies :-) and so are you!

I am a fan of the ER over peds or GPs... if something happens to my

child that warrants they need to be seen by an allopath, it's the ER

for us. I don't mess with allopathic doctors otherwise. I just rely

on my chiro for most things. If he thinks we need further care, I

seek a homeopath. My kids have never been to a " well-baby " visit in

their lives, and are all the more " well " because of it!

Yes, you could take him elsewhere, although the wait can be hours. I would be

cautious about walk-in clinics, because injured people usually go directly to

the ER so the bulk of the patients seem to be hacking and coughing sick people.

Sick children should be home--bedrest, vaporizers and homeopathics are what I

depend on. Rarely do I bring them anywhere unless I truly feel they're on

death's door. But a good familiy doctor would definitely be a better bet than a

pediatrician, and a naturopath even better.

The only problem i see with ER's is that they always overtreat &

overmedicate. If you show up at their steps they must " take care " of

you. They start IV's, blood work, and whole bunch of other stuff right

away. Pediatrician would first check the baby and suggest what to do

and maybe give a prescription. If you don't want to, just go home and

don't feel that prescription but at ER you're at their mercy. I would

leave ER for real live threatening situations.

My experience was actually opposite of this. I took my two-year-old to

an urgent care immediately and then a ped several times over several

days (he had inhaled a part of a pistachio into his right bronchial

tubes), and they kept telling me he had everything under the sun...

RSV, ear infection, bronchitis, etc. and prescribed antibiotics THREE

different times. No one would listen to me that he wasn't sick; he

had a foreign body in his breathing tubes, and I'd SEEN him inhale it!

When we went to the ER, they didn't prescribe anything, didn't start

an IV, didn't force any drugs at all. They did an interview with me,

listened to his lungs then did an x-ray, but that didn't pick up the

nut... so again, I was told I was being a paranoid mom and it was

highly unlikely that he'd inhaled a nut into his system. They did

agree with me that he wasn't " sick " though, and didn't prescribe

anything at all. Long story short, they did schedule exploratory

surgery after I hounded them enough, and when they scoped him they DID

find and extract the nut. Of course, he did have to have an IV when

he had surgery, but they waited until he was under general anesthesia

before they stuck him.

I just figured with all the parents FINALLY seeing the light on the

whole vaccine situation, that more and more pediatricians will start

to refuse to see patients who won't vaccinate because they are

afraid of us proving them wrong.
