Guest guest
Sheri It began with behavioral changes such as not napping, not wanting to be put down, and definitely not wanting to be away from mom at all. He wanted me to hold him all the time, which is very unlike him. That moodiness lasted about six days. When I say moody, I mean crying...I literally had him in the bathroom with me and needed to set him on the floor so I could use the toilet (TMI-I know) and he was bawling because I put him down. His eyes also looked red and swollen, not from crying though. On day 7 the fever hit. About 4 in the afternoon, he became very fussy and his fever hit 103F...He also threw up. His appetite was gone (he still nurses frequently but also eats solids--organic, balanced food), though he did continue to nurse A LOT (thank goodness). The up and down fever lasted four days, during which he remained extremely fussy, the whites of his eyes looked bloodshot-though that happened after he threw up, so I don't know if it was from the force- but his lids were a bit puffy. The day after the fever left, there was a slight rash, looking like prickly heat rather than the online pics of roseola rash. It began around the diaper area and spread upward. His face had a few red dots, but not many. In three or four days, that was gone, though I see that he still has a few bumps that are no longer red, just flesh colored. Again, very small bumps...So maybe not roseola? Susie
Guest guest
Wow--long time between when crankiness began and fever started. Odd that it started in the diaper area. Food related? Any new foods introduced? That shouldn't cause a fever but...how were his poops? Good thing you're nursing him. That's the best medicine. Winnie Was it Roseola? Guest guest
No new foods.. Poop was normal. It was really strange. I stay home with him, and we have our little routines and this all was quite a shock . I know how he is when teething and how he behaves with colds- usually sleeps tons. This was way out of the ordinary... Susie Via iPod Touch On Sep 23, 2008, at 7:56 PM, wharrison@... wrote: Wow--long time between when crankiness began and fever started. Guest guest
You sound very in tune to him. Be sure to keep a record of your observations. It might come in handy down the road. Here's some interesting info on roseola--first fever, then rash. That sounds like what your son had: " Roseola is distinguished by the way in which the symptoms appear. In the first phase the child develops a high fever -- temperatures may reach 104-105 F (40-40.5). Febrile seizures are relatively common (about 1 in 10 patients) with roseola because of the high temperature, but the virus does not seem to cause seizures directly. In the second phase, a red rash with bumps appears. The hallmark of roseola is that the rash appears after the fever goes away, although occasionally the rash may start while the child is still febrile or may not appear until a little while after the fever breaks. Guest guest
What's the difference between measles and roseola? They sound awfully lot alike. Maybe the spots in the mouth and the sensitive eyes for measles? Winnie Re: Was it Roseola? Guest guest
That's it. Roseola seems to be just the fever, then rash when fever breaks abruptly. Also roseola is over much more quickly, Kids seem to return to almost normal activity when the fever is gone.. From: wharrison@... <wharrison@...> Subject: Re: Re: Was it Roseola? Guest guest
I strongly believe my son had roseola at 12 months. He just all of a sudden went from normal to very high fever and was very tired, no other symptoms at all. He just layed in bed all day and occasionally sat up to play. Would only drink juice, he would not drink milk so I gave him juice to stay hydrated (now I know this is a good thing, we should fast during a fever, only juice or water.) After like exactly 24 hours he threw up...a lot...and sudenly his fever disappeared. For a few days afterwards he was kind of groggy and was having difficulty walking and playing. Then he got this pink, swirly, flat rash all over his torso only. Within a few hours it was gone and he was completely 100% back to normal. Roseola, german measles, and measles, and parvo used to be grouped in the same categories and most doctors could not and still cannot tell the difference. So maybe, it could have been parvo what your baby had? > > You sound very in tune to him. Be sure to keep a record of your observations. It might come in handy down the road. Guest guest
Susie, My infant just got over Roseola about a month and a half ago. Roseola usually starts with a very high fever 103. and up for about 3-4 days, possible seizures can happen. Then out of no where the fever suddenly goes away and the rash starts, at first it was just around his arms and face and then it took over his whole body. It lasted about a week and then it went away, but then the rash came back for about 3 days. The doctors at the hospital said it was normal for the rash to come a go for weeks sometimes after Roseola. > > Sheri > It began with behavioral changes such as not napping, not wanting to > be put down, and definitely not wanting to be away from mom at all.
