Guest guest
We will be travelling to the Philippines sometime in the future and there are a number of vaccinations required to obtain our visas. Does anyone know if we can get out of this using a religious exemption?

That makes a difference, especially if you're traveling from an endemic (sp?) country to another. Are you absolutely sure they're REQUIRED and not just highly recommended? Is the Philippines still a 3rd world country? Sheri would know more on this, but there are very few countries where vaccines are still REQUIRED for visitors; most are optional and just recommended. > Does >anyone know if we can get out of this using a religious exemption? > I looked into getting a religious exemption once for a trip to a country in SA where they REQUIRED a certain vaccine, but was told that while it would probably be accepted, I wouldn't know for sure until I got there. In addition, my refusal/exemption explanation would have to be written in the language of the country. Not a problem for me because I speak Spanish, but I cancelled the trip anyway. Guest guest
I hope you're right that they are just recommended. We are from from the US and will be adopting from PI some time next year. Dont know when yet. I dont think disease is as much as issue there as say Africa so I hope they wont be very strict. We may have struggles with getting the kids back and not vaccinating them but that will be a hurdle we will address later. Guest guest
Per " The Vaccinaton Guide " by Randall Neustaedter, OMD, pg. 265: " Vaccines prior to travel fall into three general categories: - routine vaccines normally given in childhood that may have lapsed or you never received - exotic vaccines recommended for travel to specifid countries - REQUIRE VACCINES for entry into specific countries (Yellow Fever is the only vaccine currently in this category.) " So, unless something has changed recently, you need to find out if PI has a " mandatory vaccination " policy for Yellow Fever. All other vaccines are just " recommended " . Guest guest
From PA I went to Taiwan- where vaxing was suggested but not required. I'd check again if you are in the states. Yes the Philipenes are still third world. If you go outside the cities you'll see why. I have a lot of friends over there. One was recently married and moved with her hubby to Australia. Don't eat anything meatish from a street vendor- that's how everyone gets HepB out there, and watch out for precut fruit- some like to put bleach on it to keep it looking fresh. Bleach might be good for washing, but not for you tummy. And PLEASE bring homeopathic/herbal/whatever you prefer remedies for traveler's diahrea, and general health stuff!!! Especially if you are travleing from the states. Everything, even the air, may shock your system. Had a great time in Asia myself- but not without occassional mishaps. But my grandmother came and had to go back early because of stomache problems- she's addicted to allopathy though Good Luck!! > > >We will be travelling to the Philippines sometime in the future and > >there are a number of vaccinations required to obtain our visas. > > > Where are you coming from before you go to the Philippines? Guest guest
To add to this (not that I know that much about it because I never get to go anywhere!), I think the yellow fever vaccine is required by some countries if you come back from countries with yellow fever. Ex: a citizen of the US won't be allowed back in unvaxed after visiting a S. American country that has yellow fever. But that S.Amer. country won't require it for you to visit. Guest guest
Why don't you mail Ella (member on this list) about this subject? She has just emigrated from the Philippines to Australia, but I'm sure she will still have much insight to share. If you want to post privately, let me know and I'll send you her e-mail address.
