Guest guest
Can someone enlighten me on the RSV vaccine? We do not vax our kids but I have a newborn and it is coming up on RSV season. With my last child we stayed home during RSV season but I won't have that luxury this time. Is there a homeopathic way to prevent RSV? Guest guest
I don't know about homeopathics for RSV, but I can tell you there is no RSV vaccine. The shots people talk about for RSV are monthly doses of antibody, and they are reserved for highest at risk babies, those born very premature, those with chronic lung disease or heart conditions. The shots are horrifically expensive, between $1000 and $1500 per shot, and so insurance companies won't pay for them unless certain criteria are met, such as being very premature, although there has to be more to it than just that. I have a very premature baby, born at 26 weeks, so this is something I've looked into a bit. And about RSV specifically, I talked to several doctors about it. Most say that almost every child by age 2 will have had it to some degree, it's just that for most otherwise healthy kids, it's nothing more than a cold. Unfortunately, it doesn't confer lifelong immunity, but the older and stronger the person, the less likely complications from it become. For myself, I'm still a little torn on the shots for my preemie. They contain human and mouse DNA as well as preservatives, but they don't work the same way vaccines do. Their job is to give antibodies, not stimulate the immune system to make it's own. We'll definitely be staying home this winter, and I'm breastfeeding him, which has been shown to reduce RSV incidence, but I still don't know whether we will do the shots or not. Anyway, I hope that helps a bit. Good luck. Guest guest
What? Ok, now I'm TOTALLY confused. I thought it was an oral vaccine..... http://www.askdrsears.com/thevaccinebook/archives/2008_10_01_archive.asp\ #10_07_08 <http://www.askdrsears.com/thevaccinebook/archives/2008_10_01_archive.as\ p#10_07_08> http://www.merckvaccines.com/rotateqProductPage_frmst.html?WT.mc_id=T006\ 1 <http://www.merckvaccines.com/rotateqProductPage_frmst.html?WT.mc_id=T00\ 61> http://www.gsk.com/media/pressreleases/2008/2008_pressrelease_10024.htm <http://www.gsk.com/media/pressreleases/2008/2008_pressrelease_10024.htm\ > Can someone help me out here? Not that it's appropriate for my kids (dd had RSV at 7 days & ds is 14), but a child in my daycare received it last year & I was concerned about the fact it was oral AND live in reference to shedding to any other unvaxed babies in my care. I meant to say, rotavirus causes diarrhea, while RSV is a respiratory disease. Bronwyn
