SAARC, UNAIDS sign MoU on AIDS prevention

Kathmandu, Apr 19 (IANS) :

The South Asian Association for Regional ation (SAARC) and the UN

Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Monday signed a memorandum of understanding on

the dreaded disease, reports Xinhua.

The two organisations have agreed to mutually cooperate to help the member

countries to strive towards the goals for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support

for those infected and affected by the fatal disease, a press release issued by

the SAARC secretariat here said.

Research, analysis and dissemination of information are to be promoted on

enhancing technical cooperation and human resources development, targeting

programmes for vulnerable groups - young people, intravenous drug users, mobile

populations and trafficked people, especially women, the release added.

About half a million people in South Asia are affected by HIV/AIDS.

2) Joint Workshop to be organized by SAARC and ASEAN Secretariats to promote

awareness on HIV/AIDS prevention and control , August/- September 2004, Venue

3) SAARC Awareness Year 2004 for TB and HIV/AIDS in all Member States by STC,

2004, To be observed during 2004.

4) SAARC Regional Conference on TB, HIV/AIDS in all Member States by STC, 2004,

Kathmandu, Nepal, Dates to be announced

5) Situational Analysis of TB and HIV/AIDS in Member Countries by STC, 2004,

Member States, Dates to be announced
