Guest guest
We have a dear family friend who had this done and my MIL just had a knee replaced. There are exercises they are given to get ready, DO THEM! My MIL did hers faithfully while her SIL did not and she is far, far better off. Also, be prepared to push in PT. And, yes, better eating habits started now will go a long way on the other side, when she can move around better. Off the top of my head I would say Coral calcium but keep asking here: you don't want to interfere with the surgery. I second the pro-biotics. I am not pro-doctor, but everyone I have me who has had one of these replacements has said their lives are so much better for it. My mother is going to need a hip replacement after the holidays. She has needed it for years but has a strong fear of doctors (smart lady) and has avoided it. But is now only able to walk with a cane and getting worse by the week. What can she do to prepare for surgery? Are there certain vitamins or things she should bone up on? I know she will take the antibiotics post surgery but I will get her probiotics to work on countering that. We are very concerned as she is quite obese and has high risk of complications. Would appreciate any thoughts! I'm not used to being the one taking care of my parent, quite the role reversal. =) Melinda C. in Mass. Guest guest
I suggest taking Arnica before going into surgery and from the minute coming out until the pain is gone. It will help heal and kill the pain. Guest guest
Winnie, years ago my holistic dentist said not to use Arnica before oral surgery or extractions. I don't remember the reason for this - sorry, age related memory problems! LOL! Perhaps Sheri or could shed some light on this. It was fantastic after abdominal surgery - none of the (apparently) usual lumpy haematomas that can hang around for months! Guest guest
Hmm, I took it before getting a root canal, and after. No swelling, tenderness--nothing. I did it on the advice on a friend who had several oral surgeries and the same results. My 83-yr-old mother used it before having a wisdom tooth pulled, too. Plus, another friend has had several surgeries, one most recently on her neck--very scary! and took it repeatedly before and after. I can't imagine why the dentist would suggest not taking it. I'd also be curious to know. Guest guest
It's funny because my mother just recently had shoulder surgery and when she was doing the pre-op, they told her not to take arnica, which is in traumeel, which our naturopath had suggested she take. My mother was told it can have some effect on bleeding, not sure which way - clotting or not clotting. She was told by the surgeon's assistant that taking it after was a very good idea, so she was definitely not anti-natural medicine. Guest guest
Now that you mention it, there is a dentist here in town who will not work on children who have not been dosed with arnica for a certain amount of time prior to their appointment. Lots of conflicting information out there, no? I just listen to my naturopath and go with that!! Guest guest
Maybe there's some confusion among some of the surgeons/dentists who are not familiar with homeopathy and they think the arnica is in cream form--which is not used topically on open wounds. It CAN have an effect on the bleeding, a clotting effect, if you will. That's why you would take it. The less blood in the area, the less pain. But it gets reduced through healing rather than forcing it to clot. I don't know if that is a technically correct way of explaining it but... I've never heard any conflict over this before--very interesting. Guest guest
I am preparing to have surgery myself in 9 days (so I've been MIA from the list for a bit, lots of things going on lately). My homeopath also instructed me not to take any arnica before my surgery. A different homeopath also recommended this before my daughter's oral surgery a couple of years ago. They both said arnica can actually increase bleeding during surgery. They both, however, did say to give arnica by mouth as soon as possible after surgery, which is what I'm planning on doing. I guess it's a decision each person has to make for themselves, to take it or not to take it. Just my 2 cents. Guest guest
Certainly arnica, when prescribed by a homeopath and taken homeopathically, should not be problem as it is being used on an energetic level. Perhaps the crude substance could present a problem with bleeding - it is certainly contra-indicated on broken skin, but I always thought that was because it would sting badly. Like you, Winnie, I've used it before and after dental surgery - it was superb after a particularly awkward extraction. Can't imagine why it would be a problem at all.
