Hi,

Put a piece of garlic on the area that is warm. It should help. It may

burn your skin, but it works.

I was given ABX and went that route b/c I was trying to get my milk in at

the same time and nursing a newborn.. Didn't have time for things to not

work.

The mastitis did go away but supply still isn't normal on that side. What a

memory!

I am not a big antibiotics fan, but this can get nasty. The single most

effective treatment for duct problems is Cabbage. Yes, I am serious. Take

a leaf off the head, place it around the breast over the affected area (you

will find it curves perfectly for this purpose) and leave it in there until

it wilts. Keep placing new leaves in there and nurse as much as you can

stand. I had a mass a full hand-width across that was gone overnight using

this method. You might try this before you take the Abs, remembering to

drink, rest, and pack enough garlic into your system to scare vampires for

miles. You may end up on meds but this may be enough and it will do you

absolutely no harm.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone,

Does anyone have experience with mastitis? I have had what I thought

was a plugged duct for about 3 days now. It is a sore lump in my

right breast but it is not hot or red. I've been massaging it, hot

water bottle, nursing a lot (daughter is 28 months). I've been taking

raw garlic, colloidal silver, vit C and echinacea tea for the last 24

hours or so. Yesterday afternoon and evening I had a low grade fever,

so I am suspecting mastitis. I am also PMSing and feeling run down

anyway. This all happened after a bunch of my nursing bras finally

fell apart and I started wearing tighter sports bras on a regular basis.

I am going to the Urgent Care clinic this morning and I know he is

going to give me antibiotics. Is there anyway I can avoid taking

antibiotics for this or is it a must? I read mega doses of Vitamin C

3000-4000mg on kellymom.com. What form of C is best for that? About

how long should it take to resolve?

Hi Caroline,

**Sounds like it's come from a blocked duct. All that garlic is going to

make your milk taste very strange!!

Very few cases of mastitis come from infection by a bacterium. Where it is

bacterial in nature it is usually staph. Aureus that's caused it and that

usually happens when there is cracked skin in the area of the breast. Most

usually cracked nipples with poor positioning/latching. There is an opening

and staph. Aureus, which normally lives on the surface of the skin, can

track in. You get a high fever with that and extreme pain. It's very acute

and does respond to antibiotics.

From what you've said, my money is on these tight-fitting bras that you've

been wearing. It'll do it every time. And a/bx won't make a lot of

difference because it almost certainly hasn't been caused by a bacterial

infection. You'll probably just end up with thrush, like I did. And that

will take a very long time to get rid of and will cripple you with pain. I

had to stop feeding my girl for nearly nine weeks when I had thrush.

I don't think colloidal silver will do a lot because you don't have an

*infection*. Concentrate on keeping feeding as much as you can, massaging

while you do, warm - not hot - baths, showers, compresses. Lean over your

daughter when she feeds so that your breasts hang down and let gravity help

shift the blockage!! Get the bra off and leave it off for now. Make sure

your car seatbelt isn't cutting in, likewise handbag straps. Don't let your

girl press into the breast tissue when she feeds and try not to lie on that

side at night because your arm digging in might cause more blockages. Savoy

cabbage leaves, chilled in the fridge, then apply to the area. Avoid dairy

produce if you can, and consider a good omega-3 supplement to help prevent

milk clogging the ducts. Drink lots of water to flush your kidneys well,

and get lots of rest. Get someone to look after your if possible and spend

your time feeding if you can and our girl is willing. Otherwise get hold of

a breastpump and get that milk moving!

It'll resolve when that duct clears and the milk is flowing again. Mastitis

literally means inflamed breast tissue and the immune response comes from

milk leaking into the breast tissue where it isn't supposed to be. Feed,

feed, and feed some more. VitC might help you a bit but it's not something

I'd do. It's a *mechanical* problem and adjusting the *mechanics* will fix

it.

I had it once--used homeopathy, warm compresses and had the baby nurse the heck

out of it. It was quite painful, but didn't last too long, maybe a day or two or

three?? You should be able to conquer this without antibiotics. Good luck!

I had mastitis, was sick as a dog and felt like I had the flu, after my son

had (shoot, having a brain fart, the thing that causes the ulcers in the

mouth) and wouldn't nurse for 2 days. I can't remember the remedy I took,

but talk to Sheri, the homeopathics do work. The other thing is a cabbage

leaf poultice on the affected breast. Sounds weird, but it works.
