Guest guest
I have not and will not vaccinate my daughter (now 3yrs old and in preschool), and my brother had decided years ago that his kids wouldn't be vaccinated. He and his wife have had difficulty getting pregnant and after many years they finally carried their daughter to 24 weeks when she had to be delivered as a micro preemie weighing 1.5 pounds. She has battled and is now doing well and is growing but still struggles with common preemie issues. My brother and I talked today because the doctors and pushing and insisting that their daughter get her first vaccination 8 weeks after birth. She is now only 3 lbs and would be only 32 weeks gestational age. She is still 8 weeks away from being full term let alone a two month old baby! His daughter has been through surgery, transfusions and has had many different medications in her system over the last 6 weeks. She is currently on breast milk only. Her parents don't know what to do. The docs are pushing the vaccine because of her comprimised health and she is in a hospital situation but my brother can't understand why they would compromise her natural immunity espcially considering she is on her mom's breast milk. He is having a hard time standing up to the doctors because they are being firm about this and my brother is worried that the care of his daughter may suffer over the next two months in NICU if they see him as a bad parent for not doing what is BEST in their opinion. (HA!) Nothing we have ever read discusses the issues with vaccinating preemies. He is feeling he has nothing to support his opinion. I am STUNNED that this is even an issue. He has until the 16th to figure something out. They need his consent to give the needle but this is ripping him up inside. The doctors have him feeling like he is playing russian roulet with his little miracle babe. Isn't it almost unbelievable? Steph

Guest guest
Yes, it's *almost* unbelievable. He has my sympathies. I've shared my story here before, but my youngest was born at 26 weeks earlier this year. The NICU staff didn't really have a problem with me declining the " birth " dose of Heb B, which for preemies that early is given at 30 days of age, despite the package insert admitting that preemies gain no serological evidence of immunity. But when the " 2 month " dose came around, I had to do a bit of fancy talking. It really helped that by that point, I had a good relationship with my son's primary nurse. She knew me pretty well, and said she wasn't at all surprised when I told her I'd spent more time researching diseases and vaccines than I did writing my master's thesis. The docs were concerned that I'd made my decision without reading the worthless vaccine indoctrination sheets, even though they knew I had older children and had most likely seen the dumb things before. But I told them I'd done the reading already, much of it from the CDC itself and the vaccine manufacturers, and I was comfortable with the decision. They didn't agree with it, but they knew it wasn't their decision to make. I'm actually surprised it wasn't more of a fight. But my son escaped the NICU vax-free. He's now 8 months, 5 months corrected age, still exclusively breastfed, and doing very well. I would tell your brother to let the staff know in no uncertain terms that he answered the question of whether or not to vax a long time ago, that he's done his research, thankyouverymuch, and he will not be consenting to any vaxes for his baby, who has already been through so much. On a side note, do you know if they've offered to vax your brother and his wife with TDaP? I hear that's the new thing for NICU parents, to make it more " convenient " for them. Our NICU either didn't do that, or they knew better than to offer it to me. Guest guest
Hi Steph: I had a 26 week preemie who is a beautiful 5 month old now. In the NICU they wanted to vaccinate her at 2 months of age, when she was barely 5 pounds. Luckily our team never pushed us and our Neonatologist warned us that some babies have more As and Bs after vaccinations temporarily. I basically told the team that since her chance of exposure in the NICU is very low, and I had an appointment with the pediatrician 3 days after discharge from the NICU that I will deal with the vaccinations after we were discharged. Since we are very cautious with her this first year with crowds etc, we have delayed that for a year with the pediatrician. Looks like this family will be needing some medical intervention. The safe thing would be to say we will handle it with our pediatrician after she is discharged and finding someone open to not vaccinating at that time. Hope this helps. Of course, till that time I didn't express any strong opinions about vaccinations to the medical team because I didn't feel like it was anybody's concerns and hadn't made up my mind yet. Kirana From: rebels_mommy <rebels_mommy@...> Subject: Preemie vaccination Vaccinations Date: Tuesday, December 9, 2008, 6:19 PM I have not and will not vaccinate my daughter (now 3yrs old and in preschool), and my brother had decided years ago that his kids wouldn't be vaccinated. Guest guest
I have a good friend whose son almost died at birth--and he was full term. Something wrong with his intestines. Anyway, she figured he was so fragile that vaccinating would harm him so refused them all. The docs felt the opposite, that because he was so fragile he " needed " the vaccines even more than a normal baby. She never vaxed him his whole life. He's 18 and healthy as can be. She ran into one of the nurses a few years ago and told her so. The nurse was speechless. They were WRONG. Tell your brother that he certainly does know what to do. The very fact that he's torn about it shows this. He doesn't have until the 16th. He has as long as he wants because it's his call, not the docs. You tell him to be strong and do his job as the parent. Protect his daughter, not the doctors egos. Guest guest
Healthy trial babies only http://whale.to/vaccine/healthy_trial_babies_only.html they exclude unhealthy babies from vaccine trials, then give the vaccine to all and sundry.
