Guest guest
She can refuse the shot regardless of the reason... it's her choice what medocal interventions to allow. I'd just say NO and leave it at that. Tell her not to let them bully her. What state is she in? Guest guest
She doesn't have to give a reason. Just because they ask doesn't mean it's any of their business. It's her child's body and her right to refuse any treatment she so chooses. So they can ask her why, but honestly, unless the laws are drastically different from where we are, they don't have a right to REQUIRE it. I mean, if she was being born at home she wouldn't get it and no one would be banging on the door forcing it on her. We included our own waiver in our file and signed the hospitals but only after crossing out all the parts we disagreed with. =) We did let them know that due to the benzyl alcohol in the product, and the blantant warning in the package insert that " This product can cause death " , that we felt it was against our better judgment to give it. When I showed them the package insert I had printed out and highlighted that warning, they shut up pretty fast. My midwife even had an article showing that injected vit. K wasn't any more effective than oral. We gave our baby oral vitamin K from www.birthwithlove.com - which is just the vitamin in olive oil. This is how they give it in many European countries. The only reason they give it in a shot here is because the oral stuff has to be given on the day of birth and then a week later as well, and drs. here don't trust parents to give the second dose a week later after they've left the hospital. Guest guest
I would ask to see the " law " in writing where it states that her reasons have to be other than concerns over cancers, etc. That sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. Guest guest
Yes, that's what I think too... but it IS NY; they have such tricky laws. Here's the vac lib page for NY: http://www.vaclib.org/exempt/newyork.htm I'd contact Barbara Labrecque, listed on that page, and get her input. Guest guest
I will talk to Barb again. She got me going! Thanks, Jenn L Re: My sis-due in 3 weeks & Vit. Guest guest
It's a medication administered by the hospital and they can not tell your sister that she can NOT refuse it except under certain circumstances. It is her right, as the parent, to refuse any medications and procedures for her child. They can not legally do this. They may think they can intimidate her in to doing it because they've had parents refuse in the past but legally they can not administer something she is opposed to. She can go ahead and give something in writing but they can not tell her that her reasoning is not valid, it is her RIGHT. Tell her to not give in or be intimidated, that's bullshit. What city/state is she in? Makes me glad I'm in Seattle where these things are much more lenient.
Guest guest
Barbara can definitely help - she went through this recently Sheri At 11:25 PM 12/16/2008, you wrote: >Yes, that's what I think too... but it IS NY; they have such tricky laws. > >Here's the vac lib page for NY: >http://www.vaclib.org/exempt/newyork.htm > >I'd contact Barbara Labrecque, listed on that page, and get her input. > > > > > >On Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 10:41 PM, <wharrison@...> wrote: > > I would ask to see the " law " in writing where it states that her reasons > > have to be other than concerns over cancers, etc. That sounds like a bunch > > of hooey to me. > > > > Winnie > >------------------------------------ > >
Guest guest
Instead of the Vit K injection, your sister can purchase oral Vit K which is totally natural. I didn't know about the dangers of the Vit K shot with my first, but am going to do the oral Vit K with my second. A friend of mine, who is on this list, bought the oral for her baby and was able to give it to him after signing some forms (not sure of the details on that, maybe she can elaborate). The website is www.birthwithlove.com and it's $30 including shipping, and has a shelf-life of 6 months. The baby gets one drop at birth, a drop a week later, and if breast-fed, a drop one month later. Hth. Elissa, in MA
