Guest guest
Yes, as an older Mom myself, been at it for 24 years and have many more to go with a 3 year old under foot, I agree that I do look at them differently now though fortunately, I started looking at them a little cross eyed before my first was born when I chose to birth at home to avoid the interventions that could come in the hospital. I did have an ob gyn who supported home births in that he would do pre-natals on my terms. He also served as a back up for my midwife and ended up coming to the birth at the end when we discovered that my first was a frank breech. And yes, it was a surprise eventhough I had gone in to see him after my water broke. He missed it! Yes, the expert palpitated and didn't realize that she was breech. But we got her delivered and she was healthy and gained 5 lbs the first month without any doctors or well visits, etc. What really helped me to get my chops up when it came to dealing with doctors was _Amazon.com: How to Raise a Healthy Child in Spite of Your Doctor: S. Md Mendelsohn: Books_ (http://www.amazon.com/Raise-Healthy-Child-Spite-Doctor/dp/0345342763) After reading his book, someone who had been on the inside and revealed how little doctors really know about many things and how much he believed that much of the modern medicine was a joke and not geared towards health, I was empowered to stand up for my children and to avoid all that they tell you, you should do, well baby visits, vaccines, tylenol, etc. I avoided all of that and relied mostly on homeopathy for acute illnesses that are inevitable. The one time that I let my guard down and trusted a doctor with my 5 month old because she had a swelling behind her ear and though she had no fever or seemed ill in any other way, I was afraid that it might be mastoiditis which can be very serious. So, I took her to an ENT who belittled me for not bringing her sooner and sent us immediately 3 hours away to Charity Hospital in New Orleans where we were told that she had a classic case of mastoiditis and she was subjected to spinal tap, head xrays, and a surgery that we were told might leave her paralyzed on one side of her face. While cutting behind her ear to check the problem they decided to go ahead and puncture her eardrum because there most likely was infection. Well she did not have an ear infection, nor did she have mastoiditis but rather only had a staph infection from a scratch behind her ear. All that the original ENT needed to do was culture it and then lance it but instead my daughter was stuck on a contagious ward in a charity hospital with all kinds of sick kids for days. They kept telling me that she was going to spike a fever. But she never had a fever at ALL. I was livid and came up against the no vaccine thing with them. They wanted me to meet with their infectious disease specialist. I refused and left that place as soon as I could. I did not follow up with the antibiotics nor did I ever let them get their hands on any of my kids after that. She has no long term effects other than she has like a nervous cough if she puts something in or near her ear like a q-tip. She's almost 21 now and vaccine free still. I just really encourage all young mom's to find a mentor here. Ask the questions. Trust your gut and do not give in to their fear mongering and bullying. They really only know a little about a lot of things and you should never trust them blindly with your children. Most are not healers but simply pushers of pills and other poisions. I say this with confidence after 24 years of exploration and thank God everyday that somehow, I learned what I did when I did and was able to dodge their bullets for the most part! I have to say that as I've gotten older, I look at the dnt here...). When I realize the person in front of me might have training, but not the " time on the job " I've had, it is so much easier to go against their recommendations. I had one ped, fresh out of med school, who kept trying to give me the spiel about vaccines. I said, " look Sonny (I didn't actually call him that!), I've been doing this awhile, and doing it well. You are wasting your breath on me. Let's get on with the check up. I've got things to do. " As a new parent, and especially for younger parents, it is very difficult to look at the docs as your equal. They are just people who did well in school in the sciences and decided on medicine as a career path. They are not anointed from on high with special powers or insight. They are just plain people. They are also one of the medical tools for us to use should we wish, but we are the final authority on what's best for our children. That's the way I've come to look at it, but it took a long time. I think new parents who are questioning the docs on vaccines beforehand are incredibly insightful and brave.
