Guest guest
Caroline, My daughter had/still has the end of what your describing and I also freaked that it could be pertussis. I had her tested probably a month ago and she was negative but believe it or not she still has the cough and junky nose your talking about it comes in bursts thou and esp when she is laying down. She gets into a coughing fit that causes her to gag on the phlem and then throw it up. She has been this way for over two months. I have given her everything the doctor sug.- C plus, etc. I think its just a new strain of the cold bug and boy does it like to hang around I have some symptoms of it myself still and I have had it longer than her. Just be strong even if it is persussis its not the end of the world Heidi From: Caroline Hesse <carolinehesse@...> Subject: Toddler sick - nervous Vaccinations Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 8:40 AM Hello everyone, I originally posted this story on the OT4Vax board, but I wanted to put it here since I'm concerned it might be pertussis. My daughter got a cold on Thanksgiving. ..fever for 3 days, junky nose, that's it. This is like day 11, the nose is still just as junky (no worse, no better). Now she is coughing in the evening before bed. She woke up around midnight last night and coughed a junky cough for a while. She eventually threw up from choking on it. The cough does seem related to laying down and the junk pooling in her nose/throat. Now this morning she has a low-grade fever. She is still in good spirits. I'm taking her to the ped this morning. Of course, she has had no vaccines and I'm sure that will come up. Of course, I'm freaking...sinus infection, pertussis??? Sigh. I feel like I've done everything right. I cleansed her bowels in the beginning, saline, bulb suction, hot showers, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Sambucus. Any words of wisdom and/or comfort are deeply appreciated. Guest guest
Thanks Heidi, Thanks so much. I think the fact that she has a fever again is what is the most upsetting. This indicates that she has some sort of secondary infection that she is trying to fight off. I'm taking her to the pedi this morning, and I'm nervous she will want to give her antibiotics. She has already had them twice in her short life and I'm not interested in giving them to her ever again. I know pertussis wouldn't be the end of the world, but I would just like to know how to treat it if it is. I've heard sodium ascorbate, but I don't know how to use it or dose it. And is there a point where it is too late to start using it to help curb the illness? ~Caroline > > From: Caroline Hesse <carolinehesse@...> > Subject: Toddler sick - nervous > Vaccinations > Date: Monday, December 8, 2008, 8:40 AM > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > I originally posted this story on the OT4Vax board, but I wanted to > put it here since I'm concerned it might be pertussis. > > My daughter got a cold on Thanksgiving. ..fever for 3 days, junky nose, > that's it. Guest guest
" I'm nervous she will want to give her antibiotics " ... Heidi... if you take her in to the ped. of course that is what they will prescribe... that is the ONLY thing they know how to do... push drugs.I would skip the ped and take her to my chiro or homeopath. But, I understand you want the peace of mind at this point. If you are just going in for a diagnosis, dont be bullied, don't argue... kindly take the prescription but chuck it when you walk out. They cannot force you to give poison to your baby... you have to be a willing participant in that instance.. Stand firm on your convinction that these drugs will only hurt your baby further. Let her body naturally do what it knows... go to a local health store if you have one available... she will be fine. hugs arianna Arianna Mojica- (UCC 1-207/1-103) ~~~ " All rights not demanded are presumed waived " . ~ Thurston ________________________________ From: Caroline Hesse <carolinehesse@...> Vaccinations Sent: Monday, December 8, 2008 9:05:53 AM Subject: Re: Toddler sick - nervous Thanks Heidi, Thanks so much. Guest guest
Have you thought about taking her to an herbalist? There are some great herbs that can clear infections and junk in the nose/throat with fever! Guest guest
Hi, I hope your little one is feeling better. My 4 year old son brought something home from school. He was sick all of 3 days (some coughing - wet and productive, mucus, sneezing). Never ran a fever, but was warm for a day or two. I did some mint rub on his neck at night, blew his nose, did some homeopathic remedies and a syrup and all was well. Me? Another story: I've been battling the same bug going on 2 weeks !! Awful sore throat, mucus galore, sneezing, dry unproductive cough, etc. I've been doing anything I could think of without much help. I finally consulted both a homeopath and a naturopath and I'm finally getting better. Interestingly enough, when I called my homeopath, she said I had called her a year earlier almost to the day !! Same cough.. I'm hoping to finally treat it once and for all !! Just an FYI: my 4 year old has never been vaxxed. His immune system works just fine. Guest guest
The pediatrician will give antibiotics if it's pertussis. Some will put them on it before tests confirm it. However, you can also successfully treat it with homeopathy. Your choice. Guest guest
I would use herbs for this severe of a cold. I would (and have in the past) use: Herbs for Kids Echinacea/Golden Seal. I use the recommended dosage on the bottle by weight. When my kids got one really bad " cold " , complete with high fever and congestion, I gave the Echinacea/ Golden Seal with Sambucol and extra Vit.C. Also remember to cut out ALL dairy products, including baby bottles of cow's milk. It makes the kid too mucusy and then the mucus itself gets bacteria in it, making a whole nother infection. :-) I also really like Cold and Flu Remedy by Nature Works but its really hard to find in the stores. I stock up when I do find it. Follow the directions on the bottle if you find it. It's homeopathy but already mixed and REALLY works. I used to use for me when I was in my 20's and getting colds a couple times a year. Now I've used it once on my kids and it works just as wonderfully (according to weight of the child). Be careful to cut out cheese and yogurts and sugars and white flours, all the junk some families eat. Those things cause mucus too, prolonging a cold. I've never actually filled a prescription for antibiotics for my kids. One time my doc actually did give me one (he is very conservative) and I kept it " just in case " the cold got worse and I felt I needed it. I never needed to fill it but it made me feel better to have it in my possession. I believe in antibiotics, btw. I just don't believe to use them all the time and frankly, I've never used them for my kids and don't really think I'll ever need to. But if I ever do need them, well, they are available if absolutely necessary and nothing else works. :-) HTH. - Arlynn
Guest guest
It could possibly be pertussis. My two youngest children, ages 5 months and 2 years, just recovered from pertussis last month. My advice? Do nothing. Treat the symptoms. We went through hell all of September and October, but not because of the pertussis, it was because of the stupid doctors and their scare tactics. First of all, The test for pertussis was VERY painful for my two children, and second of all, the results are not accurate. When the pertussis moves into the second phase of the illness, the tests do not come back positive anymore. So, they could test negative, but still have it, just too late to test positive. Next, the doctor prescribed antibiotics, not only for the two children who had pertussis, but for THE ENTIRE FAMILY....myself, husband, and two older children who have already been vaccinated for pertussis!!! He called it a " profylactic antibiotic " , and told me that we ALL had to take meds, or we would ALL get pertussis. He said I should sleep with the baby, because she could stop breating and die in the middle of the night. (we already co-sleep lol). He said that the Capital Health Swat team would be banging on my door (his words), and that we were causing an epidemic by not vaxxing our two youngest. Whatever. Guess what? My two children recovered quickly and easily from the pertussis, and *gasp* no-one else caught it! I decided NOT to give the antibiotics to anyone in my family, therefore we got through it naturally. And it was NO BIG DEAL. The cough sounds awful, yes, and I had a few " what a terrible mother you are for bringing your sick child out in public " looks from strangers, but we got through it just fine! Pertussis is minor. Don't worry about it, just treat the cough....it WILL last for up to 3 months, but becomes less and less severe. My 2 yo still coughs once or twice a day if he runs around too much, but he is just fine. + 4 10, Quinn 5, Jezek 2, Briar 5 months

Guest guest
Bless you all for your feedback. I am leaning hard on this group and a few others right now. OK so here's where we are. I took Ella to the chiropractor today. She adjusted her, gave her probiotics, garlic liquid, and said come back in a week...she doesn't need abx. When I took her to the ped, she listened to her chest and said the cold had 'gone to her chest' and her breathing rate should be 15 breaths/ minute, but it was more like 25. Her temp was normal at the appointment. She prescribed Amoxicyllin and said I could wait a day and try hosing her nose better and clapping on her chest/sides/back and maybe we'd get " lucky. " She was saying she sees a lot of kids end up in the hospital when there is a chest infection. She also said they don't have much appetite when there is a chest infection and she really doesn't have much of one. So now I'm torn. I desperately don't want to give her the abx but the pedi scared me that it could turn into pneumonia if we don't. So I'm confused and freaked now...UGH! > > It could possibly be pertussis. Guest guest
That's excellent advice. My mommy gut always tells me what to do. The ped was mainly worried about her breathing rate. > > > > > > It could possibly be pertussis. Guest guest
> > That's excellent advice. My mommy gut always tells me what to do. > The ped was mainly worried about her breathing rate. > > My son has had similar kind of sickness repeat itself all throughout the year. It would repeat itself every month or so; i thought of pertussis, phnemonia, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, asthma, cold, flu, etc. Visited his holistic ped. afew times and he was finally prescribed bronchial nubelizer meds to help when coughs gets very persistant. I had some sleepless nights and even now i am scarred that it might start again. I think we kind of figured after all this time that it's allergic in nature even though we're not exactly sure what causes his coughs but he has enviromental as well as food allergies. I am afraid that he exhibits symptoms of asthma even though he is too young to diagnose right now. I am just giving you some food for thought. If cough last too long and comes and goes in cycles, it might be allergies to food or dust/pollen/cats/dogs/molds/chemicals. I alternate between a smear of eucolyptus & peppermint oil behind his ear when he goes to bed. Also, i got this natural chest rub with 6 different herbs like thyme, mint, etc. that i rub on his chest before sleep when he is congested. Lots of liquids and freshly squeezed carrot with apple and a bit of parsley is great for nutritional boost.
