Guest guest
My son is almost 3 years old. He has not had ANY vaccinations or any of that crap they give routinely in the hospital- Vit K, Silver Nitrate, etc.) He was breastfed for nearly 2 years (didn't really take solids until he was 10 months old). I honestly thought he would be a healthy child b/c of it??? I am also so torn on what to do medically when he is sick (really sick, not just a cold). I hate to use meds but sometimes it seems like the only choice so I need some direction. Soon after he weaned, this is last winter, he was about 2, he got a terrible cold that ended up with fevers and a raging double ear infection. He was miserable and hurting. I had to go to the ER and I had to use fever reducers and antibiotics- I could not watch him scream in pain anymore. He was better within a day. Was that a bad decision? Fast forward to now. He had a cold for 2 weeks. Then he started to run a high fever (102-105), which lasted for five whole days. He just kept getting worse until he was practically lifeless. HIs fever was relentless, he stopped eating completely, drank only water and very little of it, was extremely lethargic, said his head hurt, terrible cough. After 2 weeks of the cold and then 5 days of the fever (fever reducer only offered short periods of no fever if any)...I couldn't see him suffer anymore. We went to the doctor yesterday and he has PNEUMONIA! They wanted to admit him to the hospital but I talked them into treating him at home. They gave him a shot of antibiotic, and starting today I need to give an oral antibiotic once a day for 10 days. Today he is like a new child...no fever at all, eating/drinking again, playing again, etc. I know many on this list are against fever reducers and antibiotic use...but my son was so sick and suffering...how do you watch them suffer and just hope they get better and not worry to death? I mean, those medicines provided so much comfort to my son and those antibiotics made him remarkably better in less than 24 hours. I am also wondering why his immune system is not fighting it off since it was not compromised by vaccines and since he was breastfed for so long. I have 2 other kids (4 yrs and 6 months). My 4 year old had the same cold for 2 weeks but got better. My 6 month old (fully breastfed) still has a cough but is acting completely happy and normal otherwise, this is week 3 and I am praying it doesn't turn into something worse. Is there ANY occasion its ok to intervene- I mean, is it not dangerous to let a fever get to 105 or higher? Cant they result in seizures? Couldn't he have become seriously ill if I just let his pneumonia go without intervening? I really need some help understanding all of this. THANKS Amy **************Life should be easier.
