Guest guest
Caroline, We have had excellent results with garlic and vitamin C.. It took longer to go away initially, but there were no rebound infections. The silver is useful also. Kim (Mom of 7) In a message dated 12/23/2008 11:02:37 A.M. Guest guest
Hi, Caroline. First, it sounds to be as if it's clearing out. This is good. FYI--Something I was told by a ped is that children under age 4 don't even have the sinuses formed to get sinus infections. I don't know if this is true because now I doubt everything they've ever told me, but if it is, then there is no " sinus infection " anyway, just congestion. Don't get stuck in the antibiotic/infection cycle. The antibiotics weaken the immune system and more illnesses result. Plus, if there was no infection but just allergies or something (dust, pet hair...) clogging her up, the antibiotics only make it appear the " infection " is gone. Then it comes back. I have never met a ped who cultures for ear or chest infections. They make a guess at what it usually is and prescribe the antibiotic " known " for that type of infection. Therefore, if you have a urinary tract infection, they will give you Levaquin. If you have a chest infection, they will give you Biaxin or Zithromax. It doesn't matter to them what the actual bug is, just the location. So, good luck getting them to culture it for you, or getting the results soon enough to make a difference. I would not let the time of year dictate whether she should get antibiotics. If you're sick about her getting meds, then you it would be helpful to get a naturopath who can help you through this. But it doesn't sound serious at all, just a cold. Winnie OT: Toddler Cold - Now Sinus Infection? Need Help... Guest guest
Desperation is it. I'm with you here, I guess I just want to get her chest listened to and her sinuses looked at, for my own piece of mind and my husband's. I know they will give me an Rx. But I feel like I've done everything else and it has still been a month. I've done probiotics, garlic, colloidal silver, cod liver oil, Vitamin C, etc. and it is still hanging on. Does anyone know how to dose Vitamin C to bowel tolerance in a toddler? She is 35 lbs and I only have buffered ascorbic acid in 1000mg pills. I can't find sodium ascorbate anywhere. Guest guest
I'm all for getting piece of mind. You should follow your instincts on that and do what's comfortable for you. How about get her looked at, take the prescription to have on hand and only fill it if you feel the need? I just did that last week, and even got it filled but never used it. If her chest is clear, I would keep doing what you're doing and let it runs its course. You know, this could be taking a month because the antibiotics slowed things down. I know that sinking feeling, though, that things are taking a turn for the worse. I usually panic when it goes into the chest. But I don't think the goop coming out of her is a negative. The alternative is for it to stay in her. THAT is when you run into problems. The discharge is really only clear at the beginning or with allergies. Yellow or green is the dead cells clearing out, at least that's how it was explained to me. Vit. C--how does she take it? Do you put it in applesauce? I always more about getting it into them than how much they were getting but 1000 mg. does sound a bit much. I'd give half that then play it by ear. If you can get the quercetin, it has Vit. c in it, and will have that goop cleared out in no time. Good luck! Winnie OT: Toddler Cold - Now Sinus > Infection? Guest guest
Winnie- I was always under the impression as long as it was clear, it was 'clean', it's when it's yellow or green that there's 'bugs' in it?? B/c my son doesn't have allergies, but when he gets an occasional cold, etc, i always strive to keep it clear- making him blow his nose a lot, more so if it starts turning yellow/green (which it does in me & my son if we don't blow regularly- ie. overnight, or me, i tend to sniffle it instead of blowing lol). I'm not sure where I read it, I'm pretty sure it was in one of my natural/holistic remedy books- but it says to use saline nasal spray if it's very thick, but the goal is to keep it thin & clear. But back to the thread's topic- my son just had a sinus infection um, 3wks ago, it took about a week before ALL snot disappeared, but the last 4 days it was minimal & didn't have any other symptoms. Anyway- he woke up w/ it, screaming that his head & nose hurt, so as I checked his nose (b/c he tends to occasionally stick things up there...) I touched his cheeks & he screamed again- found out his sinuses in his face were very sore. So I mixed up a packet of Emergen-C w/ some Echinacea 4 times the first day. The snot went from really bad thick green to clear the first day. Then the next 2 days I did 3x of the Emergen-C & Echinacea. He was great on day 4 & after. It only turned green over the first 2 nights, but was clear after he blew it a few times. I've found if we take a big dose of Emergen-C for the first day we have any symptoms, they either go away by the next day, or it's VERY minimal. We traveled to mom's one time when I'd forgotten my " cold bag " & by the time we got there I started feeling like I was developing a sinus infection. Wasn't able to get more Emergen-C for 2 days & by that time it'd set in ROYALLY & I, then CJ, was MISERABLE the rest of the visit lol. I swear by that stuff lol. ~marcia~ > > I'm all for getting piece of mind. You should follow your instincts on that and do what's comfortable for you. Guest guest
No matter what they tell you the test shows, their only solution is more drugs. Calm yourself. The body is eliminating cellular waste and the drugs that were given. All infections will go away if their not being fed or drugged. Try liquids only and have faith in Mother Nature. If she was smart enough to give life, I think she can handle a little toxemia. I would suggest buying a copy of the Physicians desk reference. Its the doctors bible. It will tell you how many ways the drug will destroy the immune system. In fact if you are really going back to see Dr. enstein, (My name for the Allopaths )take the book with you. He will love to answer intelligent questions. Guest guest
On the yellow/green vs. clear, that's my take on it, too. When it's clear, no problem. Colored means there's an infection going on--doesn't mean it's serious, though. I never thought about it as being the goal to make it clear, but I suppose that makes sense. You want them to get the yucky stuff out and then it's either clear or gone. We live by EmergenC, too. My older kids will take it on their own whenever they feel something coming on. My little guy has finally stopped rejecting it for the fizziness--took nine years! Glad to hear you have success with it, too! Winnie Re: OT: Toddler Cold - Now Sinus Infection? Need Help... Guest guest
Yes, absolutely! There is more than a " chance " a sinus infection can go away on it's own... it WILL if you leave it alone and let the body do what it innately knows how to do already. Because the mucus is yellow means the body is already doing just that! A yellow or green tinge means the body is ridding itself of the toxin or whatever is causing the disturbance, and it is coming out through the mucous (path of least resistance). I would highly suggest not suppressing the " illness " further with more drugs or antibiotics. This will only suppress the symptoms she is now having (snotty nose), and the disturbance will then be forced to find another way out of the body, if it indeed can. Giving more antibiotics, Tylenol, or anything of that nature will only create a viscous cycle that will seemingly never end. Just try to have faith in mother nature. My eight-month-old is on the tail end of RSV (with that horribly thick mucous), with no interventions at all, other than probiotics, vitamin C, vaporizers, lots of liquids and fresh fruits (no citrus, which causes more mucous). I even quit with the homeopathics and just decided to let his body handle it. He's come through it just fine. It's so hard when our kids are sick, I know. I think it's harder on the parents than it is on the kids! Hug yourself, and try to stay calm. You baby's body knows just what to do to clear the stuffy nose. Have faith. Guest guest
Caroline, As someone who struggled with sinus infections for years, I have read ALOT about this one. The most recent studies all have shown that antibiotics are VERY ineffective at curing sinus infections. This is why in Europe, they are only prescribed for about 5% of infections. We are just antibiotic crazy here. The stuff you are doing will be helpful. Also giving up dairy for a time. Most infections will go away on their own with these kinds of home treatments, or you might consider adding homeopathy. Please, don't fall for the antibiotics...I wish I hadn't! If your child continues getting ill like this, there may be something else at the root - a food intolerance, etc. - to be explored. Melinda C. Guest guest
Caroline, If you go to the doc, ask about a decongestant, to open the sinus', and guaifinesen, to thin the mucous and support draining. If you do this, along with the other supports you are already doing, it should heal on its own. Antibiotics don't work for the sinus'. There is no direct blood flow to the sinus, so no way for the antibiotics to get there. My son was antibiotics for MONTHS trying to rid him of a severe sinus infection when he was 4. When the doc wanted to do sinus surgery because the antibiotics weren't working, I said time to try something else. Did a little research, came across a book called " Sinus Survival " by Ivker where he advocated the above, in addition to what you are doing. I went to the family doc and made my case. He agreed and started my son on it immediately. He also prescribed a compounded nasal spray containing and antifungal, steroid, and antibiotic. The combination worked very well. Hope this helps. C.
