Guest guest Posted April 9, 2004 Report Share Posted April 9, 2004 Elton AIDS foundation to fund AIDS project in Manipur Source: Atom Samarendra Imphal, April 08: London based Elton AIDS foundation has agreed to fund Manipur Network of Positive People (MNP+) for taking up a project entitled " Support for HIV intervention of a community based organization " in Manipur. MNP+ secretary L Deepak told The e-pao.net that the objective of the project are to facilitate community efforts to build support group and strengthen existing networks of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Manipur. It also aimed to provide home visits by a team of doctor and nurses and counselor to offer medical advice and treatment to the PLWA. Despite educating families about home-based care methods the project will also facilitate the provision of livelihood support to female whose husbands were died of AIDS. The project will also cover abandoned AIDS orphan by providing temporary faster home care, Deepak said. The Elton AIDS Foundation will fund the project at the tune of Rs 14 lakh. The amount will be sanctioned in two installments. The one-year project is being launched this month, Deepak said. The fund is being sanctioned through Action Aid India headquartered at London. The grant was pursued through Action Aid India's Guwahati regional centre. The target groups of the pilot project are PLWA, commercial sex workers, widow and orphan. Under the project MNP+ will engaged a doctor, staff nurse, accountant, driver and counselor. MNP+ was formed on September 7, 1997, by five ex-injecting drug users, who were living with HIV. It is a self-support group, which intends to overcome the constraints and limitations faced PLWHA for overall improvement in their lives in particular and society in general. The group has now more than 200 PLWHA as members.
