Dr. Olavi Elo, Former Director Country Planning and Programme

Development of UNAIDS will be in India soon to replace Dr.

Millier who is going back to Geneva.

Date of birth: 26 May 1939

Languages: English, Finnish, French (Swedish, German)

Before joining UNAIDS on 17 August 1998, Olavi Elo had a career of 19

years in the UN system, most recently as WHO Representative for

India, including Chairmanship of the UN Theme Group on HIV/AIDS. The

other assignments in the UN system include WHO Medical Officer in

Somalia, UNHCR/WHO Health Coordinator in Pakistan, Chief of Emergency

Preparedness at WHO HQ and Director of Disaster Reduction at UN

Secretariat, Department of Humanitarian Affairs. Olavi Elo joined the

UN from the position of Director, Department of Public Health in

Central Health Administration of Finland. He holds a medical degree

from Turku, Finland 1965, DPH from London UK 1969 and Dr.Med.Sc.

1975, specializing in public health and health administration.
