[Moderator] Subject: Request for Information about Your HIV/AIDS Services Dear Friend According to the “HIV Sentinel Surveillance 2002” carried out by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), India has around 4.58 million HIV infected people. If effective and timely measures are not undertaken, this figure will grow to alarming levels and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country may well become uncontrollable. In order to counter such a situation, many government, voluntary, private and bilateral / multilateral agencies have initiated HIV/AIDS programmes in various parts of India. Yet, for a long time a national database to enable collaborations among these agencies towards enhancing the impact of their programmes was not available. In order to create such a database, SAATHII undertook an extensive mapping of HIV/AIDS services in India in 2002-03, and in July 2003 published “SAATHII RED RIBBON PAGES, 2003 Edition – A Directory of HIV/AIDS Services in India”. This directory was a landmark accomplishment for both India and SAATHII. Along with a similar directory brought out by NACO (also in 2003), it was one of the first national HIV/AIDS services directories to be published. The directory lists and indexes details of various HIV/AIDS preventive, care, support, treatment and enabling environment services provided by nearly 1,200 implementing agencies (voluntary / government / private) and around 100 funding agencies (government / private / bilateral / multilateral). It presents information about the implementing agencies through state wise chapters and district wise sub-chapters. Its preparation and distribution was funded by The M. Lloyd Foundation, Los Angeles, USA; UNAIDS India, New Delhi; and Global Strategies for HIV Prevention, San , USA. In 2003-04, SAATHII, along with its collaborating partners, Sahaya International, , USA; Rural Education and Action Development (READ), Andimadam, Tamil Nadu; ABK-AOTS DOSOKAI (Tamil Nadu Center), Chennai; Positive Women Network of South India (PWN+), Chennai; and Naz Foundation (India) Trust, New Delhi, proposes to publish the next edition of the directory. The new edition will incorporate updated information on the agencies included in the first edition as well as information about agencies that could not be included in the first edition for various reasons. Emphasis will be laid on improving the directory in terms of better coverage of the geographical regions and HIV/AIDS sectors that were under-represented in the first edition. We need your co-operation for this crucial project. We have enclosed a form and request you to take a few minutes to fill it up with the necessary information. You can send us the completed form by e-mail, fax or post (self-addressed stamped envelope enclosed). We will appreciate it if you can also provide us with the names and contact information of other agencies working on HIV/AIDS issues that you are aware of. Once the directory is complete, we will make sure that your agency receives a copy of the directory. Apart from a print version, this directory will also have an electronic version available on SAATHII’s website (www.saathii.org) with a searchable database format. Thank you in advance and looking forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely Md.
