Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease

of the liver and bile ducts that is frequently progressive and can

lead to end-stage liver disease. The disease is characterized by

progressive inflammation, fibrosis, and stricturing of the

intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. In the first part,

epidemiology, classification and etiology has been discussed on:

Thank you Dr. Agrawal for posting these abstracts of conditions from the medical

perspective. I find them both interesting and informative. Viewing this from

an organism balance viewpoint I cannot help but notice that the etiology is

unknown. While many co factors have been associated, cause and effect eludes.

Having dealt with many cases of UC I do notice from a constitutional perspective

of both client and condition some similar patterns. This is what would be

referred to in Ayurveda as a pitta disease. The constitutional profile of most

suffering from this would also be pitta. Therefore those types of remedies that

are anti pitta may be of great benefit. Cooling, anti inflammatory, anti

oxidant, liver protective and detoxifying, herbs, foods and supplements may be

helpful. these same substances also tend to be anti viral, most likely because

of the livers role in dealing with viral infections (both phyllanthus nururi and

bupluerum falcatum have been shown to increase the production of interferon for

instance). If there is an auto immune component here those substances that are

supportive of immune function and tissue repair that are not necessarily bitter,

cooling, and detoxifying may also be of value.

This is a great example of where another condition may play a part in the

formation of gallstones. If so, while removing a gallbladder will

symptomatically relieve a patients gallbladder distress, the underlying issues

will be left unattended and some of the " symptoms " may not be relieved. The

continuing liver dysfunction then potentially leading to more serious issues.

Thank you again for your participation and input. The interest, concern,

and involvement of a medical doctor such as yourself is invaluable to me and

this group.

Always, in all ways, Dave
