Guest guest
, Has someone looked at your bulge for you? Is it red and hard? It could be an abcess. You say you don't have fever. Have you been taking pain medication like Vicodin or Percocet? Those have tylenol in them, so you wouldn't get fever, because the tylenol in the pain medicine doesn't let the temperature rise. It's also a concern about a hematoma, a collection of old blood under the skin. The problem with that is it might push on the incision and interfere with healing. I think you should call the doctor and tell him about it. It might need to be looked at before a week. Better safe! Good luck ,Dee --------------------------------- Stay in the know. Guest guest
Thanks for the input Dee. I did call the doctor's office this morning. They told me that as long as there isn't any redness and no fever, not to be concerned. Should there be any change, call immediately and someone will see me. I've rested quite a bit today in the hopes that the swelling will ease up a bit. Maybe tomorrow will be a better day. Thanks again, in NC > > , > Has someone looked at your bulge for you? Guest guest
, Just remember that your message probably didn't make it to the doctor. They have those women who screen calls, and make judgments on things beyond their knowledge. Sorry to sound pessimistic, but it's because of so many problems with getting past the gatekeepers. If you continue to feel something's not right, go see the doctor. It's your health, not the office staff's. And, it's not true what they said about the fever. I'll be thinking of you, Dee --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. Guest guest
Hi , I'm wondering if the bulge was there right after the surgery or if it developed slowly. Did you notice it right away or after several days? Does the bulge hurt or is it just uncomfortable. If you touch it does it hurt? Does wearing the back brace bother it? Also did you ask the receptionist or whoever to tell the doctor about the edema in your legs? Is this something you have sometimes? Perhaps wearing a back brace cuts off flow of fluids to the lower body but I don't know. Does the edema go away at night? Have you checked your blood pressure? Sorry I don't have answers. All I can think of now are questions to ask. Hope everything turns out alright, Rochelle - In neck pain , " " <ccraven@...> wrote: > > I had a lamenectomy on Sept. 28 on the L5-S1 disk. Guest guest
Hi Rochelle, Right after the surgery, there was just general swelling around the incision area. The bulge came a few days later. It seems to have gone down a bit today. The only time it is really uncomfortable is when I try to rest on my back. I was having a problem with mild edema just before the surgery. I chalked it up to over doing trying to get ready to be off my feet for a while. But since the surgery, I've had a major problem with fluid retention. I already take blood pressure medication and a diuretic which is why I have been kind of concerned about the swelling. It does go down at night when I'm off my feet for several hours. For the first week after the surgery, the sciatica was gone. Two days ago, it came back with a vengence. I'm really at my wits end trying to figure out what is causing it since the herniated disk was " fixed. " But the pain going down my right leg is back and more intense than ever. I can't see my doctor before Monday because he is out of the office. So I guess I will have to hold tight and see what he has to say on Monday. Thanks for your thoughtful reply. in NC > > Hi , > I'm wondering if the bulge was there right after the surgery or if > it developed slowly. Did you notice it right away or after several > days? Guest guest
Dear , You could drive yourself crazy trying to figure out the cause of your own symptoms. (Something I have done many times) I suggest you call your internist or whoever you see about your blood pressure and ask him about your edema and if it is connected to the bulge from your surgery. Maybe he has some suggestions. I would be worried about the sciatica returning and that something is pressing on the nerves. If the pain is WORSE than you ever had before and especially if you have WEAKNESS in the leg, I would go to the ER. If the doctor there is concerned enough he will order an MRI or CT scan, which is the only way any doctor, including your spine doctor, is going to know what's going on with you. If you don't feel you need to go to the ER call back your spine surgeon's office and tell them you are in bad pain from the sciatica. Ask them who is covering for your doctor and you want to speak to him or her. At least talk to a nurse or PA. However, I do hope everything is really OK and that these symptoms are only temporary. Guest guest
Hi in NC Just wondering how your doctor's appointment went. How concerned was he over the bulge at your incision site? Guest guest
Thanks for thinking of me Rochelle. The appointment yesterday went very well. My doctor wasn't concerned at all about the bulge. He said it was normal. However, he isn't happy that the sciatica has returned. So, I got a whole batch of new drugs to try. He put me on prednisone, which is wrecking my bg levels. Got permission today from my diabetes advocate to up my dosage until I'm off the steroid. I am also now on Lyrica. It is working very well at blocking the nerve pain. It will take me a while though to adjust to it. It makes me very sleepy and dizzy. So I'm afraid to try to drive. Hopefully the side affects will subside very quickly. I had everything pretty well under control before my surgery as far as cooking and grocery shopping, but we are beginning to run out of things and my husband can't drive. Hopefully, I'll be less dizzy before we completely run out of everything. Thanks again and I hope you are feeling better very, very soon!! in NC > > Hi in NC > Just wondering how your doctor's appointment went. Guest guest
Hi , I'm glad your appointment went well. Hopefully the prednisone will take the inflamation down and the sciatica will go away. If it went away for 2 weeks, chances are it will go away as you get farther along in your healing. Concerning muscle relaxants for my neck-- I was on small amounts of Xanax at night as a muscle relaxer but unless I took it all the time it gave me rebound muscle tension so I stopped taking it. I also have flexeril, which I tried last night and it seemed to do alright, but it gives me the worst dry mouth and sometimes makes me twitch, but maybe that was because I was weaning off of xanax. In spite of that I will give the flexeril a try for a while. It does make me sleepy so I'll only take it at night. When did the doctor say you could drive? Maybe on the day you plan to drive you could wait to take the Lyrica or go when you feel least drousy. Sometimes my mom, who can't drive due to macular degeneration, takes a cab. I live too far away to help her and I'm not doing too well myself. Rochelle > > Thanks for thinking of me Rochelle. The appointment yesterday went > very well. Guest guest
- Hello , did he have lower back surgery ? I have had a few surgeries and get very constipated each time , so say it is from the anestesia , some say from the other drugs ,what ever it is from, I am bound up for at least a week. I just had Lumber spine fusion and I am in a brace that goes from just below my nipples to about 2 inches above my penis in front and from shoulder blades to 1/2 way down my butt in back. It is hard for me to sit down and get up with this on. One day when I got up , my pants bunched up and sqwished my testicles , wow did that hurt . I swelled up about the size of a lemon and had what felt like fluid build up in the scrotum . If he is in a brace , it is very easy to do an injury there. As far as not being able to urinate , maybe try some tea or other dieretic. I didn't have any problem with that . Hope this helps .
