Don't panic yet. :)

What is sold as 'agricultural grade' products are not always the same

as what is sold for humans. If I find out what is the difference

concerning epsom salts, I will post it.

HI Kim-- this has been a topic before on the autism mercury board and

somewhere in the archives susan owens had done a calculation of what

they list out their levels to be, and what it would be like " in the

bathtub " and the amount was miniscule... comparable or less than what

you would get by walking outside, probably. The bottom line was that

the amount was not going to cause any problems because it was in

parts per billion or trillion or something like that. Not to mention

the benefits for detoxification that come from using the ES baths

anyway. And I also agree with the other poster who said that

agriculture grade salts may not be the same as pharmaceutical grade

salts. Maybe we can get more info on this.

Thanks !

I would still like to find out more about this as the web site

listed the magnesium sulfate at 12.9% and the sulfur at 9.8%. It

went on to list these other heavy metals at 2ppm and 3ppm.

De-ja-vue! Just like I had no idea that 25mcg of mercury was

damaging (my doctor said " miniscule " about that too)- I have no idea

if 3ppm of mercury and all of the other toxins they listed that my

child is soaking in everyday for 20 or more minutes is equally as

damaging.

I just want to know for sure - if there is such a thing what the

heck I am doing here!

Wal-Mart here in the DFW area, carries the kind you can ingest - I got it in

the pharmacy section. If not - Walgreens usually carries it too.

Hi

I so envy you. My son has similar problem like your son. He is busy.

I am really exhausted. Can you tell me more detail about foot

soaking? How long should he need to soak? How many epson salts do

you put in the water? How long do you see the different? Thanks---

Hi Liz, I recently started Epsom salts with my daughter as well.

The main thing I've noticed is that she seems much calmer,

especially after the Epsom salt bath (I put it in her bath water).

I've read that the Epsom salts have the magnesium in a absorable

form for the body. Whatever works!

If you REALLY want to know, stop the epsom salts for 2 days, see what

happens.

I put 1 cup of Epsom salts in a big pot of very warm water. I have

my son put his feet in for about 20-25 minutes before school every

day. He doesn't complain, he eats his breakfast while he's

soaking. It took about a week or so before I was seeing any real

improvements, then I started noticing that there was a lot less

fighting going on and he seemed happier.

Hi Liz-- have you ever read susan owens explanation of how epsom

salts can help sensory issues? If not, I have a copy of it--just

email me privately

merrywbee

without the spaces of course

and I'll get you a copy of it.

I would say it is the epsom salts more than the OT therapy although

the OT therapy is helping, too. Can't separate the two entirely but

in my experience with kids with sid who have tried ES baths after

having been in OT therapy for a while, the changes you describe sound

like theirs and these were kids who had not had these changes happen

with just ot-alone.

>>>I've read that the effectiveness of epsom salts really only lasts

about 8-10 hours, if this is so why is it best to take an epsom salt

bath before bed?

I think this is generally to help them settle down and go to sleep so

they get a good night's sleep.

>>>Wouldn't it be best to do it in the morning before your child goes

to school?

You can try that too and if it works better, go with that timing.

There really isn't a one right or wrong way to go about this. The

general recommendation is to do it at night to help process out the

day's 'build up' of assorted toxins and help them sleep. But other

timings are fine too if that isn't convenient or working. Some

parents do it every day, some do once a week. For awhile, I did it in

late afternoon when the boys soaked their feet while they did their

homework.

I really don't know why it would cause problems unless it was

reaching a newer deeper level of detox. Maybe someone else knows. In

the meantime, just go with the timing and frequency that is working

best.

I have heard some of you mention that some brands of Epsom salts are

contaminated with some undesirable things, even mercury! The package I

bought has no " ingredient list " - how do I know which brands are safe and

which are not- does anyone have a working list?

Buy pharmaceutical grade, not in bulk. I don't know brands, but

buying it this way is considered " safer " .

On the bag I have, it says to dissolve 1/2 cup in a quart of water. Apply

wet, with towel.

Hi

I have only used them for my cats if they get an abscess, I dissolve

1/4 cup Epsom Salts to 1 litre of hot water (as hot as can be

handled) then I soak the affected part in the liquid, this dries the

abscess out and it clears up in no time, no vet bills which is always

a bonus :-)

Well that is for cats anyway, I have never used it on humans, but I

would imagine it would dry the skin out a lot. A book I have here

says 1 tablespoon added to a bath is relaxing, if that helps.

We use it all the time for everyday aches and pains. We just dump a cup or so

in the bathwater and

soak.

Thank you for the responses :-) Unfortunately for me, I am unable to get into a

tub which is why I wondered about the amount in a basin.

It's great for eczema.

It's great to help out anything related to the liver since both the

magnesium and sulphur in it are related to phase 1 and phase 2 liver detox.

It helps with behavioural/sensitivity/Herxheimer-healing reactions.

It soothes the muscles when they're in pain.

It helps relax before going to bed and promotes better sleep -- calcium

contracts muscles but the magnesium found in E.S. relaxes muscles.

It can clear up classic environmental allergies.

If you can't do baths - Kirkmanlabs.com sells magnesium sulfate cream which

is basically epsom salt cream.

You can also do foot baths - that helps too when you can't get a big old

soak...

ly, I grew up with my mom putting E.S. (or baking soda, or apple cider

vinegar, etc.) in every bath and I'm very thankful she did it -- I'm trying

to do for my kids what she did for us. At our house, it's on the shopping

list every week and part of every bath -- the way some people use bubble

bath, I suppose.

This may seem like a really stupid question, but...if you wash your

child's hair in an epsom salt bath, what happens? It seems to me

like it would make the hair feel/look less clean. Am I wrong? I've

been using the cream because I didn't want to have to give 2 baths -

one epsom salt and one for cleaning. Can I actually do it all in one?

Thanks,
