India has eradicated polio with vaccine?

I've been hearing a lot in the news about India not having any polio cases in a

year due to the introduction of the polio vaccine en masse. Can someone please

tell me what the REAL story is. I don't believe that India's sanitation has

dramatically or miraculously improved across the board enough to stomp out a

disease. Did the disease actually drop after the vaccine? Do we have any

statistics on cases over the last few years etc?

If this has already been covered I apologize, I am new and still navigating

things.
