Attention VacLib Members and Friends,

Recently I received an email from a lady in Utah who read the fabulous

birth plan we have posted on our website and created her own from

it.

She informed us that it was rejected by the Certified Nurse Midwives

(CNMs) at the birthing center of her local hospital.

She was shocked and saddened that her and her husband's wishes for the

birth of their fourth child would not be honored by them.

Then she proceeded at the 11th hour to seek alternative routes for the

birth. Her story is quite moving and important for all would be

moms to read in this day and age of medicalized birthing -- as though

giving birth is a disease to be feared!

We plan on updating our birthing page with the link to the awesome birth

plan that Shantelle compiled with the added note that

hospital births, even in a birthing center, may not want to honor your

informed choices. Ultimately, Shantelle discovered that

unassisted home birth was a viable option and had an amazing birth with

the loving assistance of her husband.
