A NATIONAL anti-vaccination group based in Bangalow has had its plans to hit the airwaves to millions of passengers on a major international airline grounded. American Airlines has cancelled its plans to let the controversial Australian Vaccination Network voice its views on an in-flight TV channel and in an on-board magazine following a public backlash. Yesterday Bangalow-based president of the group Meryl Dorey said the decision was frustrating and the result of an infuriating letter-writing campaign by opponents of her group who did not believe in the freedom of expression or alternate views in a democracy. "It's frustrating,'" she added "This is the sort of thing they do. "It's not something that would be of benefit in a democracy to stifle a debate." Ms Dorey lashed out at South Coast-based anti-AVN campaigner Ken McLeod and the Australian Sceptics group which she said were behind a "Stop the AVN" campaign. "Anyone who believes in democracy and freedom has got to abhor what the Stop the AVN and Ken McLeod stand for," she said. Mr McLeod considered the decision a victory in a continuing battle. "We are rather pleased that American Airlines have decided to side with the science on health and vaccine and keep the propaganda away," he said. "The campaign proceeds." American Airlines by late yesterday had not provided comment. Last month AVN's own online magazine had boasted that an interview with Meryl Dorey would be aired on all American Airlines flights - "both in the United States and overseas during the months of July and August this year". "This will reach 8.4 million travellers on over 58,000 American Airlines flights," it said. "The AVN hopes that this will make listeners aware of just some of the issues surrounding the vaccination debate.." The US-based Discover magazine which touts itself as "the best science magazine in print and online" took up the campaign to stop the interview being run.
