I just looked up the college website. They claim that students cannot afford the vaccine. Is that the reason or is it a matter of refusal? They also claim the number to be 600. From what I could tell they were allowing exemptions for consciencious objectors. Vicki From: mom4sure23 <mom4sure23@...> Vaccinations Sent: Monday, May 28, 2012 9:21 AM Subject: Re: 500 classes cancelled at Uni because students refuse vaccination and AVN mentioned in 24Medica

I live in Austin and I have not seen any media coverage on this. In fact, we were considering signing my son up for a class at ACC (he's still in high school) and I was surprised how often the meningitis vaccine was brought up as a requirement to take any classes. I was having my doubts that my exemption that we have used for the last 14 years was going to work.

By the way, I believe this is a requirement that was passed by the Texas legislature as I believe all Texas colleges/universities require the meningitis vaccine.

About a year ago my sister was telling me the story about a young woman from their area who was suffering from some bizarre health symptoms -- and it was concluded that something was eating away at her brain! She was a freshman in college. And it dawned on me -- the meningitis vaccine! Did that have something to do with this young woman's health problems -- what else would explain such a horrible thing!

Check TX law here: (http://www.nvic.org/Vaccine-Laws/state-vaccine-requirements/texas.aspx)

Usually it's required only if you live on campus because of the supposed risk of living in close quarters, although an exemption should work there anyway. I can't imagine they'd require it for a high school student to take one class. Do they require it of instructors?? Visitors to check the school out? Maintenance crews? No.

If my memory serves me correctly there were plenty of 'low cost' clinics for the shot. There was also some hub bub on the news about a fear of shortages. Jenna Forbes"SuperMommy" From: Vicki Geraci <vicki.geraci@...> To:

I just looked up the college website. They claim that students cannot afford the vaccine. Is that the reason or is it a matter of refusal? They also claim the number to be 600. From what I could tell they were allowing exemptions for consciencious objectors.
