Guest guest
Wow, Donny you obviously don't mess about. Welcome to the list good to have you onboard. I can think of 3 people (on the list) you may want to speak to Occy health wise who either are or have been involved offshore and occy health. 1. Dr. Greg Ions, who works for AON occupational Health one of the bigger providers of offshore medics and occ health services to the oil industry 2. Owen Donnelly, Occy health nurse and medic 3. Dr Rory O'Connor - Agip Doctor over here in Kazakhstan who has a certian interest in Occ health matters. I would guess from your back ground you are going to find your experiences very useful offshore as you know the oil industry becomes more and more occ health orientated by the day. If you do have any questions please feel free to pose away, all the best Ian Listowner Important Note. Guest guest
Welcome Donny, sounds as though yours mind's already made up about your career move. I've moved the other way from offshore to the beach. As Ian says I work for AOH but make a conscious effort not to involve myself in their promotion on the list to avoid any recriminations, (both from the list or my boss!). That said, always happy to help anyone out if I can Greg
Guest guest
Donny the medics course is a hard time meaning lots of info thrown at you in a short space of time but it is enjoyable. I may see you in Decemeber if you are training with AON as I sometimes assist on it as an instructor. Good luck and enjoy it and above all use the time with experienced established medcis to network and to ask all the daft questions you need. regards Kim Hello Hi everybody My name is Donny Macrae. Guest guest
Hi , Thank you. I have heard from Neil Poole, jammy sod is now Nick Farrell's back to back in the Gulf of Arabia. Bing is heading off that way soon too, not sure who with. Lyn and Mick have been kept reasonably busy around the bazaars with Aon. Not heard much from anyone else. Keep in touch! Guest guest
Thanks Joe/ Don't worry, I'm not running now. But I plan on doing everything in my power to get running again. I think I was smart enough to back off early, I only have some slight discomfort, not the pain others seem to be having. Does anyone have any recommendations for alternative exercises? Seems like virtually everything requires the use of the legs (bike, stairmaster, elliptical, rowing). What about Pool-running? I don't have access to a pool but might hunt around if it's something aerobic I can do. Meanwhile I'm living on a diet of Advil and Chon/Glu (can't spell it so not even going to try), icing many times daily (even keep a pack at work so I can ice while I sit at my desk), doing very light weights (static, not moving) and waiting months for a slot at the doctors. Looks like I'll have to wait for the 2004 Boston Marathon. And I can vouch for the downhill running " no-no " , I am pretty sure that's how this all started. 348 people in this group? Yikes! Didn't know it was so widespread. bob > > > > If you think you are coming down with chondromalacia, running is > one of the WORST things you can do, especially downhill running. Guest guest
Hey Bob: I agree w/ and Joe, and let me add a few things: 1) Don't be so sure of your CP diagnosis. I was diagnosed with CP by two doctors and they were wrong. I am a runner too, and I'll bet my symptoms were similar to yours. It may just be tendonitis or some other soft-tissue injury. Which brings us to... 2) I don't know what type of doctor you are waiting to see, but try to find someone who can give you a thorough, full-body exam. Orthopedic Surgeons usually don't spend the time to really figure out what is truly " wrong " with you. In my case, the OS spent about 10 minutes w/ me before hastily diagnosing CP and telling me to give up running. Well, that was almost 2 years ago, and I've been running about 30 miles per week without pain for the last 9 months. I attribute my recovery to finding a " good " doctor who discovered a hip-alignment problem. He was a Pain Specialist. I guess my point is, take your time and try to figure out what your problem really is. It is going to take some time and energy on your part. It is best if you really become familiar w/ anatomy and all the different types of doctors and treatments out there. Use the Group and use Google to search around the Internet. There is a ton of information out there. For better or worse, you pretty much have to become your own doctor. As far as exercise goes, you really should know what is wrong before you start doing specific exercises. For example, you don't want to strengthen a muscle that is already too strong. As far as general exercises go, swimming (or water running) is great if you can find a pool. Low (or no) resistance stationary cycling can be good too. The rule of thumb that we throw around here is that some minor pain is alright, but don't exercise through anything that hurts too much. You may be doing more harm than good. Good luck, Doug dougfromct2002@... > > > > > > If you think you are coming down with chondromalacia, running is > > one of the WORST things you can do, especially downhill running. Guest guest
Hey Bob Just like to say that your attitude is spot-on. Cut out running right now, but always believe that one day you will run again. I still intend to get back to skiing one day... Swimming - I think crawl type strokes are good, but anything with a leg kick (eg breast-stroke) is bad even under water! And I think it was about 100 members this time last year... Joe > Thanks Joe/ > > Don't worry, I'm not running now. But I plan on doing everything in > my power to get running again. Guest guest
This is what I do when I want my eyeshadow to last: I use a non-alcoholic toner to clean the eye lid area, making sure there are no traces of oil or eye cream (which I use at night). I then apply a thin coat of oil-blotting lotion (the stuff that works to keep your nose shine-free under makeup), let it dry and dust with loose face powder (be sure and dust under the lower lashes too, so you don't get the smudged, " raccoon " look). I then apply the eyeshadow (powder) over this. My makeup lasts for hours! Hope this helps! :-) Cat > Under my powdered eyeshadow I always have to have a base or it doesn't last more than a half hour. I've used Touch Base for Eyes from Clinique...works great but kind of more than I want to spend. I've also used Aziza All day performing fix, it works but I can't find it in any stores. > Any suggestions for products or something I can make. Guest guest
Thanks so much for your suggestion. I'm not sure I can do the loose powder because it'll surely get on my contacts and drive me insane. But maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Guest guest
Greetings everyone, I have found Remote Medics a great site and source of info. Working as a platform medic on for about a year now after 9 years in the military. I am having a little bit of difficulty persuading the operating company into subscribing to a health resource company which provides everything I would need for a Occupational Health programme on board. Has anyone got any info about any free resources out there on the web? Cheers Platform Medic
Guest guest
Get in touch with the ish Health at Work People based in Union Street Aberdeen - they supply various visual aids, posters, leaflets etc, although sometimes there is some payment involved. The other thing you can try is getting in touch with your local hospitals health promotion unit, explaining your situation as an Offshore Medic - my local hospital is pretty good at supplying health promotion stuff Cheers Baz paul.scott@... wrote: Greetings everyone, I have found Remote Medics a great site and source of info.
