Hello,

By the grace of God I managed to pass ore1 (sept 2011) in the first attempt itself. I thought I would share a few tips which will help others crack the exam. I guess by now many must have already posted the questions that appeared for the exam, do go through them as they may be of use to you.

I wrote IELTS during the last week of April, in the month of May I put in an application to write ORE which got approved after much delay. In short I began preparing for the exam mid June. So I got 2.5 months to prepare for the exam. I had a study partner and we used to discuss topics every Sunday. This kept us motivated!!

The key to clearing ORE is to study smart and understand our limitations.

Use feedbacks as a guide only. I would not suggest that you rely completely on them. While you’re going through feedbacks, make a list of important topics that seem to be appearing frequently. These topics must be read and revised thoroughly .Revise the same, the day before the exam.

Even though statistics is an important topic, I did not bother doing it because I knew those numbers would not stay in my head! Instead that time was used to study something more productive.

To start off, I would suggest you spend the first week of your study in refreshing your memory. This is especially useful for those who have taken a small break from dentistry due to varied reasons. Flip through the texts that you used when you graduated from dental school. This will help remember many things you have learnt in the past. Using the same texts that you have read before is useful. Don’t read them in great detail, or you will be wasting time. Sometimes just pictures or diagrams will do the job.

After doing that chalk out a time table, giving yourself targets to finish. (I did it subject wise)

Enjoy studying; don’t consider it as a burden as all this is only going to make you a better dentist!

Here are a few topics that I consider as ‘must know ‘topics. They may not be exhaustive but is worthwhile revising them just before the exam

Sterilization and disinfection

Medical emergencies/ anaphylaxis

Hypersensitivity- All Ig’s are imp

Fluorides (amt in water/toothpaste/varnish etc and their benefits)

Radiation protection (incl. laws)

Indications for different views(e.g. bitewings/ opg etc)

Respiratory alkalosis/acidosis

Blood (values, disorders)

Crohn’s disease

Coeliac disease

Angina and MI

Cardiac cycle

Bisphosphonates

Common drug interactions

Materials used for pulpotomy /pulpectomy

Cleidocranial dysplasia

Avulsed tooth – medium /management

IOTN

Lower anterior partial denture

Bridges- planning and design

Pemphigus/ pemphygoid/lichen planus

Apical periodontitis/ periodontal abscess

Salivary gland tumours

Sjogren syndrome( primary and secondary)

Herpes

Drugs- antiviral/ antibiotic/analgesics

Trigeminal neuralgia

Law and ethics( pink book, master dentistry)

Waste disposal

LA doses

NICE guidelines

Try to finish the questions after each chapter in master dentistry

For details on drugs refer BNF

For practice (a must)- MCQ for dentistry and SAQ for dentistry by Kathleen Fan

Clinical problem solving in dentistry – is useful but not an absolute must

Pink book, blue book, Churchill- should have

I must confess that God has been kind to me because without his grace I wouldn’t have made it (prayer does work! At least for me).

Optimistic approach to life.

Allaire,  hope things get better for you soon.

C...i would stop telling doctors about bird mites.  It didn't help me, just made them treat me worse.

Can you find a new doc and just tell them about other symptoms?  Fresh start...they won't think you're crazy (even though we all know you're not!)

Most of us have to stop telling doctors about the birdmites. I told my doctor at my HMO and I think they kinda believed me... both backed away from me about 5 feet and would not touch me, including the derm. I found it humorous later. Of course the derm was wearing latex gloves when she touched me. Did they know something I didn't at the time? I don't know. In later appointments I never said anything about birdmites, just dealt with symptoms. They saw the huge welts especially on my abdomen. Each bite became the size of a quarter and totally inflamed. I am really fair skinned (redhead) so I had an allergic reaction to the saliva I think from the mites. From: "Elissa " <elissarachel@...>bird mites Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 8:41:06 AMSubject: Re: hello

I know C, but it is necessary. Isn't it sad that we have to fabricate something? Or tell half-truths? It just is the way it is. We often later feel guilty for not being honest, but they have us in a bind. They only take you seriously if you are playing by their rules and their game. Let's just say it is similar to playing a game of chess. Absolutely . Under most circumstances I'm the most truthful ( & blunt) person going; it is easier & it is usually the most direct way of going from A to B. . But if I thought I was going to get treated as if I were mentally incompetent because an ailment did not fit with any symptoms they knew, other than a psychiatric condition....too right, I'd make it into a game of strategic manoeuver.

That said, I can't imagine GPs giving antibiotics on the say so of a patient walking into the surgery. There is very good reason for caution on the part of GPs.  It is just exceedingly unfortunate that symptoms of a real problem have been little studied, thus not recognised & GPs have been taught,at med school, of a condition, where much the same symptoms, are said to be psychological.

I am 100%+ in agreement Krys. I try to be truthful and am most of the time. For instance, if I think the person might be hurt by my truth I might not say something that might hurt them. Who knows, however, maybe that bit of information might have helped them too. For example, I met a friend for coffee yesterday at a shop and I hadn't seen her for a month (a good friend); she knows everyone in town just about and I don't. Anyway, a friend of hers came into the coffee shop and they chatted and she asked me if I minded if he join us. I said it was fine. Later I discovered he monopolized things and talked incessantly and it became not fine with me as 2 hours rolled by, but I had told her it was "fine." My real feelings were of feeling out of the loop and I had come to talk to her. I've learned over the years that feelings come and go and feelings sometimes lie too. Yes, it was a feeling, but it is not the capital "T" Truth. I was not excluded.I didn't want to tell her I would have rather he not be there because my friend is in a lot of pain right now and I wanted her to feel comfortable. He was rather needy too because he is taking care of his wife full time who has severe dementia and is apparently dying and needs an outlet to just chat. So in that sense I justified not telling her how I really felt. Was I wrong, I don't know.Too much info, I know, but that was my experience re: the little "t" truth. It isn't black or white this honesty thing. From: "Krys Brennand" <krys109uk@...>bird mites Sent: Wednesday, January 11, 2012 12:17:30 PMSubject: Re: hello

I must say, I am not feeling guilty at all when purchasing my meds online telling them false reasons. I even smile when sending it off, because we all have proven them wrong. They should be the ones feeling ashame, not us !

With the Law of Attraction, we can trim unpleasant experiences if we allow ourselves to really feel what emotions

where triggered by the event and greive them. This is how we release them to God and stop storing them in our bodies. Once the root cause is released, that event can't happen again.

I was not excluded.

I didn't want to tell her I would have rather he not be there because my friend is in a lot of pain right now and I wanted her to feel comfortable. He was rather needy too because he is taking care of his wife full time who has severe dementia and is apparently dying and needs an outlet to just chat. So in that sense I justified not telling her how I really felt. Was I wrong, I don't know.

Too much info, I know, but that was my experience re: the little "t" truth. It isn't black or white this honesty thing.

Hmmm, that is kinda what I did. I use the term small "t" for truth (generated by our ideas, ego, emotions) and the larger "T" for Truth which I define as God's truth, not mine. So I let go of the incident without too much ego getting in my way. That's how I look at it. With every thought I believe we are creating karma. Cause and effect, but I want it to be positive karma and go for a higher cause. That was a good explanation . Hi Alaire, Maybe the full moon has something to do with it too.  I take raw garlic -- a little bit every morning and also 4-5 drops of oil of oregano.  I vacuum every few days too.  It was warm here last week -- one day I was outside with my mother (I moved here a couple of months ago b/c I could not stay in my condo), raking in the yard, pulling up weeds -- and I could feel a few pin prick bites, which made me wonder what the spring will be like.   But I'm hoping the mites will die out by then.  (?)   I certainly hope things improve for you too.  I've had less of the bites this full moon, thank God.  I keep cleaning with Lysol Complete too.  Take care.
