Guest guest
Debs/Tess, When I had thyroid surgery several years ago, I was placed in a room with a girl who had had a bypass operation. She may have had other surgery as well, I'm not sure. What I most remember was all the pain she was in and her calling the nurse every 15 minutes. With that and the blood pressure cuff on my arm also going off every 15 minutes, it was a very long night. On the other hand, one of my co-worker's husband had the surgery when his weight was really causing him life threatening medical problems. His surgery was successful and he is doing very well. While he is still heavy, he is leading a normal and active life and no longer being admitted to the hospital for weight related complications. Something to think about, Suzanne Re: [ ] PT & Update > Hi Tess, > > Thanks for your words of encouragement and your prayers. All contributions > are welcomed! Guest guest
Dear Suzanne...Thank you, Suzanne. The more information the better. With something so potentially dangerous yet potentially life-saving, I believe a lot of thought & prayer must go into the decision. I know folks who had great success and some with many problems afterwards. One thing I have learned and believe...the ones who were more educated about bariatric surgery AND had involvement with WLS (weight loss surgery) support groups generally do better. This is another journey we really can't do alone. Hugs of Hope & Love... Tess

Guest guest
, Hi, I don't have CMT, I joined this group and have been getting great information about CMT. My mom has it and I am hoping to learn more on how to help her. I am also curious about the affects of Gastric Bypass on CMT patients. I am actually having the Gastric Bypass Surgery next month. I have about 250 lbs to lose. I will tell you that it is not as easy as your doctor is making it out to be. I can't believe doctor would say it is an " easy " way out. It is a very hard, and extreme way to go. I believe that the choice is your's to make but definatley do your research and make an informed decision. Good Luck. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to email me.
Guest guest
Hi , I joined this group to gain information and support for my friend, Sandie, who has CMT. We both had the gastric bypass in 1986 and neither of us would recommend this procedure to you - especially for 50 lbs. Sandie and I both had over 150 lbs to lose and we lost a fair bit of it. We kept it off for a few years but then regained most of it after developing fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. This cost me my job and apparently kicked Sandies CMT into high gear. We've both been left with serious problems eating normal food and upchuck on a regular basis. Sandie is in the process of having a bowel obstruction properly diagnosed and treated but it looks like it is the result of the bypass. And she's just miserable with it right now. She didn't have much trouble in the early years after the surgery but she's making up for it now. We both have reflux disease. We had started a suppoort group at the time of our surgeries and the few people we have had contact with have all regained most, all or even more weight. You're right that your husband is being naive. So was I. My surgeon was the head of surgery and I had been referred to him so I trusted that he knew what he was doing. But we were never told the full story about this surgery. I'm so sorry that I had it done. Now I hear from doctors all over that this surgeon is not well thought of anymore. But he's still doing the surgery. Anyway, I'm rambling. I say to anyone contemplating this surgery, no matter how desperate you may be to lose weight " DON'T DO IT! THIS ISN'T THE ANSWER. Guest guest
Good Afternoon! Just like to let everyone know my sister-in-law (no CMT) has had gastric bypass surgery and has lost over 150+ lbs. Yes, it does work--but there can be a lot of complications. She has had several. Also have another friend who had it about a few months ago but not eating correctly--not losing any weight either. So if anyone is really considering it. Please do your homework and really research it. Too may people don't really know what their getting into with this surgery. Guest guest
Hello : You may hear from a few people that have freinds that had bi-pass, but we on this board had the lap band - I would never do the bi-pass as I dont want to be "gutted". The lap band has just as good of results but leaves your body as it was meant to be. I have seen studys that show many people will start to gain weight back in as little as three years after the bi-pass, and many surgeries have resulted in long term medical issues that can include death. I would look very hrd at the band as an alternative. Kenmagnoliamouth <karenostrom@...> wrote: Has anyone had the gastric bypass?I'm more interested in it, and wonder how folks feel about it.I am Interstitial Cystitis (IC), it is a permanent diease of thebladder and the lining dissolves. I'm on medication to give me a fauzbladder. But basically, I've quit smoking and I'm gaining about 5 lbs a week. I wasn't skinny before, but also I can't eat any diet products becausethe stuff they have in them is bad for the bladder, I can only have 2fruits blueberries and pears. Two types of nut almonds and cashews. No alchol, no salad dressing ( and who is going to eat a saladwithout dressing) nothing citrus or acidic at all and many preservatives.I can eat meat, and most vegtables so the likihood of me being able toget on a diet and stick to it would have me going around hungry allthe time. When I quit smoking 11 years ago, my weight went up to 220 pounds, Istarted back smoking and lost it all back down to 140. I can't goback to smoking this time. So I need some help would appreciateanyone helping me to understand how all of this happens and feelsafterwards. Guest guest
I'm looking at both of them, but because of a pre existing medical condition, I'm thinking the by pass is better for me long term. I wondered if there was another group for DR Aceves for by pass but couldn't find it. I know ultimatly I will consult with both my doctors here before making a final decision, and will more than likely go with what they want me to do
