Guest guest
Greetings: Sorry for the late reply on this topic, but I've been too busy to post the past few days. I too, have had many aspects of my CMT get BETTER over the years/since I've been an adult. This is not to say, however, that there hasn't been any progression, because while many symptoms are better, I have a few that are worse. AS A CHILD/TEEN: I had terrible leg pains especially in the evenings or at night, I was very fatigued, I fell often (3 concussions), I walked very slowly and had foot drop if I walked more than say 1/4 mile. I started wearing AFO's at 16 but only wore them a year or so due to vanity. I wore them regularly again from age 27 or so to about age 30. NOW AT AGE 33: I don't get leg pains any more, or almost never; fatigue is rarely a problem; I have a lot more energy than I did as a teen (I think depression played a part there as a teen too, though)., I can walk faster than I could in years and can now keep up with most people's " normal " pace (this used to be hard for me). I don't wear AFO's but do wear in shoe orthotics when I can find shoes they fit in. I still have occasional foot drop but it takes longer to set in. I also don't fall nearly as much as I did as a teen ; maybe a few times a year as opposed to a few times a month. WHAT HAS GOTTEN WORSE: I can't move my toes as much as I could when I was younger, my balance standing still is noticeably worse. I also can not stand on my toes at all any more which means even wearing shoes w/ pretty small heels causes me to lurch formward/bend at the knees. My hands are also weaker and have some atrophy - this is new over the past 5- 6 years. I had an increase in tremors this past fall but they decreased again w/o need for meds; I think this was related to anxiety as well as CMT. I have less anxiety now and less tremors. VITAMINS: I take a B complex, Co Enzyme Q10, Glucosamine/Chondroiton (for joints and cartilage), E and C combo - daily. I also take potassium and sellenium on occasion. EXERCISE: I exercise at least three times a week, often more. I use the no-impact eliptical machine at my gym, walk and also take a pilates class. I have lost about 10 pounds due to exercise over the past year which has helped some with balance and energy. HEALING: I see a " healing touch " practitioner twice per month; this is a lot like Reiki. It has really helped but in small increments. I too am interested in hearing if there are any others who also have had some improvements in their CMT over time. Peace, Marti
