Guest guest
I amputated the tip of my left ring finger with a carving knife back in February. I cannot imagine going thru what I just went through but with my child. So hugs mama! I wanted to add that I used pure, neat Lavender Essential Oil on my bandage dressing every day and it healed in 3 days or so. The Lavender has antiviral properties as well as a whole host of other good things for wound care and it makes the skin heal quicker. I never even went to the emergency room, took care of it myself. I wouldn't suggest doing that with a 2yo, but in the meantime, you are changing the dressing right? I'd use the Lavender on the pads that touch the wounds every single day. I used nothing else. Guest guest
What kind of a door? A barn door that horses which might or might not have tetanus might be rubbing on? Seriously, a door should not have tetanus on it. Anyway, it is too late to give a vaccine for it. You made that decision when your mind was clear of panic and emotion. In fact, it's dangerous to give it for the reasons Sheri mentioned, and also I have been told that one should never get the vaccine at the time of injury because one is MORE likely to get tetanus. I don't know why that would be--maybe because your immune system now has to focus on healing from the vaccine rather than on the actual injury? My son fell off of his bike a couple of years ago and had a gash on his stomach that required stitches. He fell on our road where people actually did walk horses. I put hydrogen peroxide on it and didn't do much else for first aid. He's fine. It's natural to be nervous when faced with these situations, but a tetanus shot won't work to prevent tetanus anyway, so you have done all you can. I'd be more concerned about the finger reattachment and that sounds as if it went well, no? Guest guest
I was told by my brother-in-law that the bacteria that causes tetanus (lockjaw) is only found on rusty nails that have been urinated on by animals. A farmer told me that this was a danger when working on fences. I have never done any research to confirm this, but it implies that a certain set of particulars have to exist for there to be any danger. My son recently stepped on a tack that entered his foot completely. We treated it with ledum. We have not vaccinated him and really don't want to but are a little nervous about this and don't want to make the wrong decision. What are the chances of him having it and dying? Guest guest
this is not true - it can be found on anything with contact with the spores - rusty nails got the reputation but only if they have been lying out in ground contaminated with manure that has tetanus spores - it is manure, NOT urine. Guest guest
Why would you vax him? even if they worked, it would not work that fast. The immune system takes time to get in gear. Why bother to start poisoning him when he’s already dealing with a finger?? Believe me, his immune system is plenty busy. He doesn’t need insult to injury,. Guest guest
I appreciate the clarification and it certainly makes more sense that it would be manure. However, my main point still holds -- the real danger is associated with farming activities, eg., building a fence where nails fall on the ground and farm animals go poo. Smashing a finger in a door poses no danger. I stated quite clearly that I had not done research on this and the story was actually told from my nieces -- let's don't get so uptight. Hi Margaret - its really hard to tell tone in email. I was not/am not uptight. Yes, mostly in farming areas. Smashing a finger in a door, does not present a danger, agreed. There are so many myths about tetanus out there and it is something I am writing about a lot. Also a google search will tell someone about tetanus and where found. Guest guest
Thank you so much everyone for your advice! I forgot about Vit C helping which I remember reading somewhere else! That's a big relief! We haven't vaccinated him thankfully and I'm really pushing my husband to not do so even for future accidents. Our holistic doc helped my husband to not worry so much by telling him he is more likely to get struck by lighting twice then get tetanus! So now we are praying that everything heals ok including the nail coming back so we don't have to do surgery since he was already sedated to put the stitches in which freaked me out since I have no idea what's in that but had no choice because there was no way he was going to stay still! Please send prayers and good vibes our way! > > Hi Brittany, > > I responded to Rhian... the lady who's son was bit by a raccoon my story of my scare with tetanus with my 16 month old son and a rusty farm rake just a few weeks ago so this research is fresh in my mind: > > http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18425960 > > Can be read that higher doses to account for body weight would have cured it completely in the larger subjects like Dr Levy says in his book, curing the incurable: > > http://www.scribd.com/doc/36111224/24/Tetanus-Curable-and-Preventable > > So even if your child did have full blown tetanus with cramping and all, high enough doses of vitamin C would cure, though he'd have to have it intravenously to have 100% chance of recovery, but even orally it's 80% if you waited for cramping to start which would be in 2-3 days.
