Guest guest
Amy, They can do a nasal swab for pertussis (whooping cough), I also had a titer done on Jake when there was the big outbreak here. One of the hallmark signs is coughing until throwing up. The kids usually feel fine, just cough. Hope that helps...Good luck, guess I'm not the only one with an unmerry Christmas. Guest guest
Becky: Way back in 2000, 's id/immuno said that most illnesses cannot be " carried " per se... but there IS the possibility of someone catching the bug and being contagious before symptoms begin. So that is of no help to you... But keep in mind that , Kate and I have all had a nasty viral bronchitis that was accompanied by a horrrrrrrrrrrrible cough, I actually considered whooping cough.... the cough is endless and choking and you don't have time to catch your breath because when you inhale it's full of mucous, then you gag at the end... and I both had the cough for at least a full month. I'm still struggling with it and now Kate (2 yrs old, non-PID) has it but so far less severe than Em or I (as usual). It's wet and from the chest. Just to give more info, never had any fever, mine was hovering around 100 for several days and upper 99s for several more days, but Zithromax did absolutely nothing for me and Augmentin did nothing for . So it appears to be viral. We live in the Chicagoland area and it seems like everybody here has a chest cold! Does Pertussis have additional symptoms that can help you be more sure? I have told nobody else but my mom this, but my cough was so bad I actually put Depends pads in my undies for a couple weeks after I peed myself twice! Hee hee, at least that tidbit might cheer you up... (mom to , age 6, dairy intolerant-related GERD -- currently has polysaccharide antibody def, previously had transient IgG, IgA, t-cell & other defs... and also to Kate, age 2, more dairy intolerant but very healthy!) Guest guest
Although Whooping Cough is very contagious, I'm not sure how likely this transmission would be. You can be tested for whooping cough, I think they just swab the throat. Is Maddie " choking " or gasping with the coughing? I think this is the key symptom. Kelsey had it when she was just a few weeks old and it was so frightening! However, I've heard that symptoms are usually less severe in older children. Also, I believe the incubation period is 7-10 days, does this fit? If so, I doubt that there is anything more you can do, she should slowly get better over the next few weeks. If you don't think she is getting any better, I'd call the doc, maybe there is something else going on. Has she had a lung xray or ct recently? I remember you saying she had her sinuses checked. Okay, I just realized that this email contains no help whatsoever! I'd just call the doctor ;-) Mom to Conner (10, Asperger's, MD, partial seizures, asthma, GERD, and immunodeficiency-CVID), Hayden (10, PDD-NOS, IBS and moderate hearing loss/aided), Evan (10, asthma and mild hearing loss/unaided), and Kelsey - surviving triplet (8 going on 18!) > >Okay-I have a question that I need help with. Guest guest
This was interesting: >>Children are immunised against the disease as babies and before school. But the team says its study - reported in the British Medical Journal - shows GPs >>should consider diagnosing whooping cough even in fully immunised children. Why would GPs not diagnose whooping cough if whooping cough is what it is? "During the last considerable epidemic at the turn of the century, I was a member of the Health Committee of London Borough Council, and I learned how the credit of vaccination is kept up statistically by diagnosing all the revaccinated cases (of smallpox) as pustular eczema, varioloid or what not---except smallpox."--- Bernard Shaw "If a disease is one which normally attacks 15 percent of the population and the effect of a prophylactic is actually to increase the proportion to 20 percent the publication of this figure of 20 will convince the public that prophylactic has reduced the percentage of incidence of that particular disease by 80 percent instead of increasing it by 5 percent because the public left to itself, are ready to remember that things used to be much more worse than they are now." - Bernard Shaw "Doctor's Dilemma" whooping cough Seems the vaccine does not even work!! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/5151778.stm
Guest guest
I would be careful with the Homeopathics. I do believe in them but have concerns that in some cases that dealing with an immune system that his either missing or has not functioning parts that it can boost the system into autoimmune responses. Just what I have heard from many of the experts. We have stayed away from Echinecea, Melatonin and other supplements due to adverse possibilities. We have both been sick for 4 weeks and see no end in sight. I am writing to see if anyone of you have gone through this with you kids and besides antibiotics (we are on Azythromiacin) what helped to relieve the symptoms. I know we have another few weeks to deal with this and I don't know if I can stand many more sleepless nights. The cough spasms are enough to completely drain both of us. We are already using a humidifier, vicks, cough drops (for me), raised his bed and are using some homeopathic remedies. He is also taking a cough syrup with codeine and motrin. Thanks! Guest guest
Try when the coughing spell happens getting in a steamy shower that always helped my son! You can even steam up the bathroom and just sit in there for a few minutes if you don't want to go through the trouble of getting in the shower Sent via BlackBerry by AT & T Whooping Cough Hi There, Well, thanks to Jordan's (2.5 yo) weak immune system (I of course say this with a sense of humor), him and I both have whooping cough! Guest guest
I don't think anyone mentioned this but EUCALYPTUS essential oil, 10-15drops mixed with rosemary and lavender oils 5 drops and some vitamin E or other natural oil, massaged on chest, neck and back before bed works wonders! Guest guest
Just keep in mind that the eucalyptus might interfere with homeopathics if you're using them, too. Guest guest
All.There is also a product I have found difficult to get in recent years but it is amazing at clearing breathing passages. It is called "white flower." It only takes a very small amount, a drop to each hand, rub together and cup over the nose and mouth. Just breath it in and it is the best stuff I have ever used. It came in a very small bottle but lasts a long time. Found it in the health food store.
