Dear ers,

When replying to posts, please refer to this. Print and save this for

reference.

Subject - Replaying.

What is it?

That is when you reply to a message and don't delete all or part of the

message that you are answering.

What do you mean?

When you hit 'reply' on your email, it copies the whole email you are

replying to into the one you are sending (this is replaying).

What do you want me to do?

Delete the parts of the email that aren't relevant. You can see myself

and other members doing this all the time. That's when you get only a

sentence or two of what the reply is talking about with the > mark next

to it.

Why do you want me to do this?

Because it wastes band width and takes up unnecessary room in people's

email. Some email providers have a limit to what people can receive and

since many people belong to a lot of lists, sometimes a few kilobytes of

room can make all the difference. As well as that it is very

aggravating to have to scroll down to the end of an email you've already

read just to see what the reply is.

ALSO people on digest get the day's email from the list in one long

email, one after the other with signatures and everything. Replaying

makes this even longer and harder to understand what is being talked

about as you can imagine. (If you want to know what digest is like let

me know and I'll put you on it for a day or so).

I don't know if I'm doing it right or not.

Just ask. I don't bite (much). I'm only too pleased to help anyone

with anything. All you have to do is ask nicely. Many people on the

list can attest to that.

Can you show me how not to do it?

Yes.

I don't know how to delete stuff.

Just ask. If you use any word processing program like Word. email is

the same - just click and hold the mouse button down and drag, then hit

delete or the backspace button.

Will you get mad at me for doing it?

No. Only if you keep doing it :-)

Above all, don't panic. If you are concerned you are doing it wrong,

just drop me a line. If you are too shy, just keep an eye on my email

for a few days to see how I structure my replies. It will soon become

clear.

Also, the list is set to no attachments. This means that you can't send

photos and little .exe's through the list. This will stop any viruses

like Happy99 getting through since a lot of people frequently don't know

about them in time. That doesn't mean we don't want you to share

photos, just that you post them in our 'photo' section. If you need help

making a photo folder and file, let me know.

This also means that HTML postings will come through as plain text - no

stationery, colours or fancy fonts. That also makes it easier on band

width and the people on digest as HTML comes through with a whole lot of

junk as it is only in plain text.

If you change a topic, please change it in the 'subject line' too. This

makes our archives search easier to use and find information by topic.

If you've got a address, please check your mail regularly then

delete. All messages are archived so there's no reason you have to

save them. Simply letting messages sit in your mailbox will trigger

bounces - and then you won't get anything new. If an address bounces, I

send a reactivation request. If I get no response, it is assumed you no

longer want to receive messages.

Remember, you are able to change your settings (individual emails,

digest, no mail) yourself, at any time, to suit your needs.
