Guest guest
Please look at this list - under the section about other toxic chemicals and substances look - alcohol IS there. ALL the medications and substances on this list have been scientifically studied in relation to worsening CMT symptoms. Read there was Dr. Parry suggests about avoidance. http://www.cmtworld.org/html/cmtrx.php
Guest guest
Regarding alcohol and CMT. I drink regularly, one glass of wine, one beer, or one martini, almost, but not quite everyday. I rarely drink more than one--maybe New year's Eve or my birthday. Here's the thing--my dad did not drink at all and we are genetic duplicates. Both of us have CMT--my dad died at age 79, I am 57. My CMT is progressing about the same way my dad's did. It would seem from my anecdotal story here that moderate to low amounts of alcohol do little harm. If there is a chance that it is harmful, it seems foolish to take the chance, but I do enjoy a good gin martini now and then. I would be interested in the experiences of others. Guest guest
My mum is 69 and drinks a few daily, she was even a publican many years ago and so alcahol has always been around her. Her CMT only got bad 2 years ago so she is not doing too badly. Myself or sister have no signs of it, we are both very sporty, we are in our early 40's so I guess we've been lucky. Guest guest
I want to thank everybody first for the warm welcome I recieved. This is a positive step for me. In regards to the alcohol, I am an alcoholic. I have been alcohol free for 1yr. and 7 mo. When I was drinking, which was beer mainly but at times I would mix it with whiskey also, anyway I drank everyday from the time I woke up till I passed out that evening. I would just about go through a case of beer a day just by myself. At that time I was going through a lot of changes, divorce, my boy's growing up and leaving but that was just excuses to drink. And that was totally wrong. And I knew this was toxic to my system. I quit taking all of my medications when I was drinking. I think this is why my CMT is progressing so rapidly, but this is just my opinion. Now , being alcohol free and having control over my life has been an eye opener. I am much happier. Alcohol is an depressent. There is time missing in my life because I can't remember. Right now I enjoy both my boy's, there is no more fighting and they call me everyday. I can wake up and smile and look at that bueatiful sunshine and start a new day. Life is what you make of it, make it a good one! Guest guest
Keep up the good work then Rita! Well done to get off it. I'm sure that you will continue to feel the benefit of life without the blurred edges. Lets face it - it's hard enough to balance without the drink! LOL I'm glad your relationships with your sons is good too. All the best Naomi (UK)
Guest guest
Tom, While in college I had small amouts of alcohol, but my walking always seemed to be changed after drinking. I didn't like the effect, and don't to this day, so I don't inbibe. Big deal so my friends tell me I am loosing out on some great wines. I'd rather take care of myself and my health so I can maintain my fitness level. Again, it is about choice for me. My daughters grew up knowing they might have CMT and were well aware alcohol would not be the way to go. I have Type X, they have it too, but are asymtomatic. Both very popular socially and bright inquisitive minds academically. One is studying genetics -careerwise- and we all take the medication list for CMT awareness seriously also. Guest guest
I don't think that I walk any less pretty than an able bodied person when I am drinking. I stumble and fall sometimes and I guess that makes us all equal. I rarely drink, but when I do, I don't feel that I suffer major setbacks for it.
