Guest guest
International Fellows Program 2004 - 2006 Fellowship Description The Santa Fe Institute announces the opening of a competition for several International Fellowships, which will be awarded for the purpose of fostering the future development of academic and interdisciplinary research activities in targeted countries throughout the world. Fellowships will be awarded for a two-year term from October 1, 2004 to September 30, 2006. Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding graduate students, postdoctoral students, and junior or senior level researchers currently affiliated, on a full-time basis, with an academic institution within India, China, Russia or other former Soviet Union countries, Africa, Eastern Europe, or Latin America. Applicants should have experience in, and/or a high level of interest in, the study of complex adaptive systems in an interdisciplinary environment. It is expected that award recipients will continue their research and/or academic activities within their home country during the Fellowship term, and after the Fellowship expires. An important component of the International Fellowship program is bringing International Fellows to SFI for two or three short-term research visits to interact with the SFI research community. While at SFI, Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in the Institute's many educational programs, workshops, and symposia. Because the two-year Fellowship period will be spent primarily in the Fellow's home country, Fellows will have the opportunity to submit proposals for modest funding for research equipment and library materials for their own institutions. When considering support for such materials, particular attention will be given to the number of local constituents served by a project and to matching support from their local institutions. The Santa Fe Institute's research is integrative and there are no formal programs or departments. The two dominant characteristics of the SFI research style are commitment to an interdisciplinary approach and an emphasis on the study of problems that involve complex interactions among their constituent parts. Prospective applicants may wish to view our current research focus areas to learn more about the Institute's research. Eligibility • Current affiliation, on a full-time and continuing basis, with an academic institution in China, India, Russia or other former Soviet Union country, or a country within the geographical regions of Africa, Eastern Europe, or Latin America. • Outstanding academic record. • Demonstrated fluency in English. • Eligibility for the proper visa to participate in fellowship visits. (Successful applicants must acquire a J-1 or other acceptable visa as a condition of participating in the Fellowship program.) Selection Criteria Participants will be selected based on demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research in the physical, biological, computational, or social sciences as they relate to complex adaptive systems. SFI is a theoretical research institute and does not have any laboratory facilities.
