Guest guest
I don't know that this would translate to dogs; but, I had a sick cat (who did eventually pass) who would not eat anything. In an effort to get something good in her I mixed a bit of kefir, unrefined coconut oil, raw liver and sardines in the blender and force fed it to her. She got better for a little while and regained her strength until her kidneys totally gave out. I have often bought animal pro-biotics for my cats and it does increase gas...but, gas is a needed part of digestion. I do not see why kefir would be any different or not good for them; but, I am not a vet. If anything, you may want to wait until you have finished the antibiotics and then give your dog small amounts of kefir. I know it did help my cat get through some of the worst of her sickness. -
Guest guest
Regarding giving kefir or probiotics to a dog who is on antibiotics, it is my understanding that the probiotics interfere with the antibiotics doing their job if given at the same time. So my vet suggests that if I want to give a probiotic to help support the healthy flora then I should give the antibiotic with the meal and wait several hours before giving the probiotic in between meals. Guest guest
I'm sorry I wasn't very clear. The antibiotic regime is over - I asked the vet on the followup visit after antibiotics were completed. Dog is doing fine after surgery and is up to a full ration of 6 cups of food daily in 2 feedings. Velma
Guest guest
Hi Velma, I am on the K9Nutrition group as well, and the moderator is a huge proponent of probiotics as well as raw feeding or at least home cooking for dogs. Not to spam the list with my first post (Hi Marilyn!), but you might browse here... http://www.b-naturals.com/index.php?main_page=newsletters Have a look at the home cooked meals and their components, and also have a read about commercial dog foods.... Lew would recommend yogurt for your dog (and mine), and I think kefir would be at least as beneficial (tho I am no expert). Also have a look at the Immune Blend supplement and other items offered on her site. Best, Ray Koke
Guest guest
Ray - Thank you so much for the tip. I will have to check it out. I have been making my own dog food since Max was just about 3 months old. Before that I had him on Spot's Stew from Halo. He did not seem to like the taste. He now eagerly eats every meal. I pretty much don't trust anything that is advertised and that would have to extend to pet food. I think the main reason I asked the question was I had read that Marilyn feeds her animals kefir soaked grains and that intrigued me. -------------------------- Chickens and turkeys, not the dogs. Guest guest
Hello I am a great dane breder ... Please be very careful when introducing new thing to your dane as he had a delicate surgery .... Kefir is VERY good for you dogs .... but never forget that danes are easily prone to bloat .... you donèt want to mess up things right now .... you DON'T want a gassy dane ...... I don't like my danes being gassy eacately because of the danger of bloating.... My danes get kefir every day ... even the one who is very sensittive about adding new item to her diet .... they never reacted with gas. ... So please because your dog is a dane plus your dog have had a very delicate surgery and because danes are easily prone to bloat, introduce new food very slowly!
