They have an aluminum handle which you wouldn't let touch the kefir, but the scooper is(usually bright orange) plastic. I got the 4 inch one but wish I had gotten the 6 or 8 inch one. The holes are the perfect size for my kefir. It is probably not food grade, but does not smell loudly or seem chemically reactive and as the kefir is just in touch with it for a moment, I decided it is safe for my household.
