Thanks Marilyn!

I am having a bugger of a time finding coral calcium at the local

health food store here on the coast of rural Maine. Beautiful area,

lots of wicked good seafood, but not exactly a mecca of resources to

utilize. Any ideas?

Another question, when you mention drying grains I assume you mean

drying grains for distribution, you stated only a day? I just dried 13

TBS in my Excalibur dehydrator for 36 hours at 95 degrees per your

advice so I would be interested in how you are able to do it in a day,

could save me valuable time. I am swamped with both types of grains

and making pemmican as well. Next is lacto fermented kraut.

Good to see your grains are growing strong! I am having a hard time

(or as we say in maine hahd) keeping up with the water kefir and milk

kefir but it is helping our family stay healthy and strong so its

worth it in the end. It has become a daily ritual.

Check sources on the internet. Google coral calcium.

I have a different kind of dehydrator than you.

Oh, I just put them in and walk away. I don't watch them drying. LOL.

Good you got the routine going. You will always have happy kefir grains.

Regarding the calcium, I've read that you can use

crushed up egg shells (which have been boiled

previously) in place of the coral calcium. Is this

something you would recommend? If so, does it need to

be ground powder fine?

Thanks,

Some people use egg shells. Some people use calcium tablets. If water grains are

growing, and staying big, they like their recipe.

On another list, a fellow just mentioned using all kinds of sea shells in

his water kefir as a calcium additive. He said to leave them in each batch

until they completely dissolve. Since you're on the coast...

Thanks all.

Being a former beer brewer I will check my beer resources.

I could go down to the beach and gather as many sea shells as I would

care for, are you sure this would be a good replacement. Would be a

great job for the kids. I could even raid there seas shell collections

from this summer. Of course I would pay a decent wage for them. If

they are a suitable replacement I could boil them in water to get rid

of any funk. We mainahs don't like funk.
