Whey separation

I've been making my kefir from new grains, ratio 1:10. After 24 hours

I have lots of grains at the top, whey taking up 30% of the jar, and

nothing else. When I strain it, there is kefir but it's not thick.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, what size mesh is best for straining? I think that my old

strainer is too fine. Thanks.
