Guest guest
Reema, I thought you were in New York with Sameer now. If so, you should not be hesitant to return what you bought off the shelf and contact a Certified Pedorthotist who can make AFOs for your specific needs. Here is a link for some contacts in NY. http://cpeds.org/members/newsearch.CFM?page=newResults If you are back in India, I do realize the problem; however, some time ago I gave your brother contacts from the India Neurological Society/Association that I would suggest you contact and get AFOS better made to suit your needs. ~ Gretchen
Guest guest
Barb, I can identify with your pain and your frustration. I walked on my ankles for years and was in tears when walking. I have had bilateral triple arthrodesis. No more tears! I still get tired walking but I have the addition of a spinal cord damage but I am so glad I did it. I had a very terrific podiatrist who deals totally in function and I trust very much. I think that is critical. I wear my Birkenstocks and am much more free to move around with a smile. I even can walk on uneven terrain with my cane without pain. I have little toe rings and get a pedicure every other week and feel so much better about myself. Birkenstocks are even getting cuter. I buy them on QVC and HSN now and the price is much better than in the stores. Candy
Guest guest
I had my AFOs made at a wonderful orthotist? They will adjust them for free until they are comfortable. I can't live without mine. I walk kinda normal when I wear them and I am in less pain in the evenings after wearing them all day. I had them when I was younger and never used them and now I realize that was foolish when they help so much. Please check out an orthotist in your area and make sure they adjust them for free. The local MDA office will give $2000 a year towards durable medical goods like AFOs and wheelchairs and such. Jen
Guest guest
I am with you on the AFO problem. The metal ones work best for me, but so many orthotists only want to make the the plastic ones. I'm afraid the profit motive is in play here. So much of the plastic ones are made in house where the metal ones are made from parts bought from suppliers. With the metal braces there is much less skin contact which makes them easier to wear especially in the summer. I really don't notice any difference in weight especially once I have them on. If I were to reccomend AFOs to someone just starting out I definitely would reccomend the metal ones. Bob
