Guest guest
Hello all, I went to the neurologist yesterday for an EMG on my arms. Prior to the EMG, the doctor suspected that I had a pinched nerve (near the elbow) in addition to the other problems caused by CMT. The results show that there is probably a pinched nerve, however the tests show that the overall nerve damage is so bad that the Dr said he would not recommend operating to fix the pinched nerve. He said that due to the " severe nerve damage resulting from Charcot-Marie-Tooth " repairing the pinched nerve would most likely result in no improvement whatsoever. He went over the EMG results which showed I have about an 80% loss of strength in my arms, 95% loss of sensitivity in my fingers and the results of several other tests/measurements that I failed miserably. Anyway, I am trying to figure out the next logical step. So in order to adequately plan my future, I am needing to get an idea of how much longer I can possibly continue to work and perform daily tasks. The Doctor said maybe one year (for work), if I'm lucky maybe two. He suggested finding a line of work where I mainly use my brain and mouth, and not my hands (I am a web programmer). Even pecking out the words to this message is a frustrating ordeal. Well, has anyone had any similar situations involving the loss of use of hands? I am wondering how bad it will get? I will always have some limited use of my hands, right? By the way, I am 33 year old. The severely damaged hands I have seen on the Internet medical sites mostly belong to persons 70+ years old. Since I have quite a few years to go before being near that age, the arms/hands issue is a very major concern to me. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks -Rob
